hot streak

the L.A. Dodgers are the 4th team to won multiple 10+ game winning streaks this century, joining the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays, the 2013 Atlanta Braves and 2001 St. Louis Cardinals.  crazy fact - neither of the previous three won a world series.  crazy eh.

today in 1976

at the 1976 summer games in Montreal, Nadia Comaneci scored the first ever perfect 10 score in gymnastics for her uneven bars routine. Omega believed that no one would ever get a perfect score in gymnastics, when they manufactured their scoreboards to go as high as 9.99.  when the score was posted, it came out as 1.00, the only way of judges could indicate that she had the 10, while confusing the spectators.  they then figured out that she scored the 10 and gave her an ovation.  she would receive six more 10's.  she left Montreal with 5 medals (3g 1s 1b).

on this day in

1.  in 1979, the most ill fated promotions happened.  Disco Demolition night was in between games of a double header between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox in Chicago.  Detroit had won the first game 4-1.  then came the promotion.  Steve Dahl headed the promotion, and the days leading to the promotion had invited radio listeners to bring their records they wanted destroyed to the ball park and they could get in for 98 cents (the radio station frequency of WLUP was 97.9).  the promotion ended up filling the ball park and an extra 15 to 20 thousand stuck out side Comiskey Park (some didn't stay out for long).  Harry Caray had even commented during the first game that there was "and odor of marijuana in the air."  first game ended, and soon afterwards Dahl, his broadcasting partner Garry Meier and Lorelei raced onto the field on an ATV with the box of records and a detonater.  after making a speech he detonated the box, blew up the records and destroyed part of the field in the process.  then came the people onto the field.  since all the security guards were at the gates, that left the field unprotected.  a bonfire was in centerfield, the batting cage was destroyed, the bases and home plate were stolen as well as some bats, some of the grass was ripped up.  eventually, Chicago police in full riot gear showed up to control the rowdiness.  second game of the double header was first postponed then eventually forfeited.   a wild night.

2.  in 1901 Cy Young of the Boston Americans wins his 300th game,  beating the Philadelphia Athletics 5-3.  in a career that started in 1890 and ended in 1911, won 511 games, still a record to this day.  the  Cy Young award was created - first as best pitcher of MLB, then as best pitcher in the A.L. and N.L.

Ichiro with another milestone

with two hits today, Ichiro Suzuki passes Rod Carew for most hits by a foreign born player.  Ichiro now has 3054.  Carew - born in Panama - retired with 3053 in 1985.  wow.  considering he spent 8 years with the Orix Bluewave in Japan (1992-2000) before joining the Seattle Mariners in 2001.  impressive.

a somber on this day

in 1981, Terrance Stanley Fox passes away due to pneumona and a chest infection after cancer had spread to his lungs a few months before.  he had originally lost his right leg after osteosarcoma was found in his knee.  Fox thought it came from a car accident in which he came out with a sore knee.  doctors said otherwise.  the knee started hurting again when he had it looked at and discovered the osteosarcoma.  on April 12, 1980.  he started the Marathon of Hope in St. Johns Newfoundland.  he started it after dipping his right leg into the Atlantic before starting his run.  on September 1 outside of Thunder Bay, he was forced to abandon his run when he suffered an intense coughing fin and suffered congestion in his chest.  he asked to be taken to the hospital.  he announced that cancer had come and spread to his lungs and was forced to abandon his cross country journey.  he had gone 143 days, 5373km (3339 miles) and had raised $1.7 million for cancer research.  in the months after, he was getting treatment, but were not helping.  he had developed a chest infection and picked up pneumonia.  he fell into a coma and died in the early hours of June 28 1981.  The Terry Fox Run began in September of 1981 thanks to one of Fox's early supporters - Isador Sharp the founder of the Four Seasons Hotel. the first run raised $3.5 million and 300,000 people ran across Canada.  the run still continues to this date.

today in 1917

a rather unusual - um - no hitter.  Babe Ruth (with the Red Sox and a pitcher at the time) started the first game of a double header against the Washington Senators.  he walked Ray Morgan.  he then proceeded to get into a heated exchange with home plate umpire Brick Owens (both apparantly with short tempers), with Owens ejecting Ruth.  Ruth then proceeded to punch Owens.  Boston's catcher Pinch Thomas was also ejected.  in come Ernie Shore to take over, with Sam Agnew taking over the catching duties.  Morgan was thrown out trying to steal second.  Shore then proceeded to get the next 26 batters in a row as the Red Sox won 4-0.  it is officially scored as a no-hitter shared by two batters, but for many years it was listed as a perfect game.  Shore had also struck out two.

today in 1894

on this day in 1894 the Olympic movement was founded.  the movement was created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, inspired to create the games after attending the Olympian Games, held by the Wenlock Olympian Society, in 1890.  at meeting of the first Olympic Congress (June 16-23 under the newly created IOC) de Coubertin brought ideas and work created by Evangelos Zappas (held an Olympic games precursor in Athens in 1859) and William Penny Brookes (Wenlock Olympian Society). on the last day of the Congress, it was decided that the first Olympic Games would be held in 1896 in Athens. (de Coubertin wanted the first games in Paris in 1900 and was convinced to hold them in Athens in 1896.  Paris still got the 1900 games)  Demetrius Vikelas was named first president until the first games were held.  Pierre de Coubertin then became president until 1925 when Henri de Bailet-Latour.  de Coubertin had stepped down after the Paris games in 1924.  today every nation has been to at least one Summer games, the evolution of the Winter games, Paralympic games and Youth Olympics.  Olympic Day is held on this day every year to celebrate the creation.

today in....

1.  in 1964 Jim Bunning tosses the 7th perfect game in Major League history as the Phillies beat the Mets 6-0 in the first game of a double header at Shea Stadium.  he only threw 90 pitches and struck out 10 - which includes 6 of the last 9 batters he faced.  this perfect game happened to fall on Fathers day and his wife and one of his daughters.  he had become the second pitcher after Cy Young (Cleveland Spiders, Boston Americans/Red Sox) to throw at least a no hitter in the A.L. and N.L.  he threw a no hitter with Detroit against Boston in 1958 (Nolan Ryan - California Angels, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, Hideo Nomo - Dodgers and Red Sox,  and Randy Johnson  - Seattle and Arizona).  side stat: Gus Triandos had become the first catcher to catch at least a no hitter in both leagues.  he caught this perfect game and Hoyt Wilhelm's no hitter with the Baltimore Orioles in 1958.

2. at the FIFA World Cup in 1986 in Mexico, Diego Maradona scores both of Argentina - one of which he knocked in with one of his hands (which went unseen by the referee) as Argentina beat England 2-1 in the quarterfinals.  that goal was described by Maradona was "the hand of God."

going "cycle"ing in Colorado

Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run in the same game) as the Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 7-5 at Coors Field.  the most astounding stat of the day - after this cycle, there have been 17 cycles hit at Coors Field since it opened in 1995. that ties for the most cycles at one ball park with Fenway Park.  Fenway Park opened in 1912.  WTH!?  that is a crazy stat.

4.  the most famous (or infamous) slow speed car chase with Al Cowlings driving the white Ford Bronco which also held O.J. Simpson.  the chase ends at Simpson's Brentwood mansion where he surrenders and ultimately charged for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Ripken was given a 22 minute ovation from the crowd, all four umpires and the Angels orginization.  during the ovation Ripken did a lap on the warning track shaking hands and high-fiving some of the crowd.  the streak ended on September 20 1998 against the Yankees when he pulled himself from the lineup. he played his last career game October 6 1999 at home.

has it been that long?

50 years ago today, the Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup.  they beat the Montreal Canadiens four games to two to win it.  it was appropriate that 1967 was also Canada's centennial year. and Expo 67 was in Montreal.  that was the last Stanley Cup won in the Original Six era.  that was Toronto's 4th cup in 6 years (1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967) and eleven players were on all four championships  wow.

on this day in........

1.  in 1670 the Hudsons Bay Company was incorporated by English royal charter known as The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay.   known as a retail store now, it started as a fur trading company.

2.  in 1939 Lou Gehrig pulled himself out of the line up in a game in Detroit, ending a 2130 consecutive games streak (over a 14 year period).  Gehrig took the line up card to the shocked umpiring crew.  in June of that year he was found what is known as Lou Gehrig's disease.  he died June 2, 1941.  here was his speech from July 4, 1939 after his retirement and number retirement ceremony:
"Fans, for the past two weeks, you've been reading about a bad break.[73] [pause] Today[74] I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the[75] earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.
"When you look around, wouldn't you consider it a privilege to associate yourself with such fine-looking men as are standing in uniform in this ballpark today?[76] Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky.
"When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift - that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies - that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter - that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body - it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know.
"So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for. - Thank you."

on this day in....

today in 1892, Lord Stanley of Preston purchase, then donated a silver rose bowl.  he then inscribed it "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" on one side of the outside rim and "From Stanley of Preston" on the other.  that bowl we know now as the Stanley Cup.  at a banquet in Ottawa on this night, the Ottawa Hockey Club was honored.  Lord Stanley's sons, Arthur and Algemon persuaded their dad to donate a trophy as a"visible sign of the hockey championship. Stanley had sent this message to the banquet:

I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion [of Canada].
There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.
I am not quite certain that the present regulations governing the arrangement of matches give entire satisfaction, and it would be worth considering whether they could not be arranged so that each team would play once at home and once at the place where their opponents hail from.
Ottawa was declared champion and a trophy was born.

also on this day, in 1945, Maurice Richard became the first player to score 50 goals in a season.  he scored his 50th in Montreal's, and his, 50th game of the season. his 50th goal tied the game at two, as Montreal beat Boston 4-2.

and on this day in 2000, Ray Bourque became the first defenseman to score 400 goals in Colorado's 4-3 loss to Detroit.  so that is some of today in history.

March Madness opener

first 8 games in and one upset as #5 Minnesota lost to #12 Middle Tennessee 81-72. meanwhile Northwestern wins its first ever NCAA tournament game beating Vanderbilt 68-66. two questionable plays of Vanderbilt at the end. 1. a foul when the player either thought they were trailing (they were tied at time i believe) and 2. an attempt at a three near half court (mind you it could have gone in). that is it for day one so far. 8 more games tonight. stay tuned.

today in.....

1. today in 1982 Wayne Gretzky scored his 77th goal of the year, breaking Phil Esposito's record of 76 from the 1970-71 NHL season. Esposito was at the game in Buffalo when Gretzky broke it. Gretzky scored his 78th and 79th against the Sabres that night and finished the 1981-82 season with 92 - a record i am sure won't be broken.
2. also on this day in 1952, the Edmonton Mercurys represented Canada at the 1952 Winter Olympics and won gold. they went 7 wins and a tie in the round robin format to win gold. the tie against the U.S. clinched the gold on the last day of the tournament. the U.S. got the silver and Sweden with the bronze. exactly 50 years later, the men's team beat the U.S. 5-2 to claim gold at the Salt Lake winter Olympics, ending the 50 year drought. this was three days after the women's hockey team to win hockey gold. the men's and women's hockey team duplicated it in 2010 and 2014.
3. and in 2010 Clara Hughes wins her last Olympic medal when she picked up a bronze in the 5000m speed skating race. she also won a gold (2006) and a second bronze (2002) in the 5000m and a silver in the team pursuit. she also won two bronzes in cycling in 1996 - in the road race and time trial. she is now a National Spokesperson for mental health and the Bell Lets Talk Mental Health initiative. and my hero and inspiration.

today in 1980

the U.S. hockey team pulled off the biggest Olympic upset as they beat the Soviet Union 4-3 in Lake Placid, New York. the U.S. were trailing 3-2 after two periods. they then score two goals in two minutes, one from Mark Johnson and the other from Mike Eruzione, to go up 4-3 with 10 minutes left in the third. they survive a late Soviet onslaught, and as the final few seconds tick of, Al Michaels of ABC - in excitement - says "Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!" the game was played at 5pm New York time and was tape delayed to 8pm for prime time viewing. the U.S clinched the gold after beating Finland 4-2 (they were trailing 2-1 after two periods when Herb Brooks got after his players and said "if you lose this game, you'll take it to your graves.) the Soviet Union bear Sweden 9-2 to take silver, while Sweden took bronze. it was a different format then, where top two teams from the two groups went to the final round (with the group result carried into the final round. Sweden tied the U.S. 2-2 while the Soviet Union beat Finland 4-2). so that is that.

on this day

on this day in 1918, Georges Vezina recorded the NHL's first ever shut out as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Toronto Arenas 9-0. in a season in which 18 of the 36 games (includes the Montreal Wanderers defaulted two games to the Canadiens and Arenas after their arena burned down. their withdrawal from the league came afterwards) had 10 goals scored total and 5 of those games the winning team scored at least 10. Georges Vezina was nicknamed "the Chicoutimi Cucumber" because the Chicoutimi native was cool in the net. that was the era in which the goalies were not allowed to fall to the ice to stop the puck. they got a penalty if they did. sadly he collapsed after starting the first game of the 1925-26 season against the Pittsburgh Pirates (not the baseball team). he wsa diagnosed with tuberculosis and died in March 1926. the Vezina trophy was named after him, first for the goalie who gave up the fewest goals, then for the top goalie voted by the GM'S.

on this day in 1924

on this day 93 years ago was the opening ceremonies for the first Winter Olympic games, held in Chamonix, France. it was held from January 25 to February 5. it was initally know as "International Week of Winter Sport." a year later it was decided that it would be renamed the first Winter Olympics and to be held every 4 years. the first gold went to Charles Jewtraw of the U.S. in the 500m speed skating event. two unique situations happened at these games. 1. figure skater Gillis Grafstrom of Sweden defended his summer Olympic gold from 1920 (figure skating was a summer Olympic sport. i don't get it either) and 2. the Canadian ice hockey team also defended it's summer Olympic gold from 1920. (ice hockey was also a summer sport. i still don't get) it was also the last summer sport defended in the winter games. it was the first time a host nation failed to win a gold on home soil. France had three bronze. it would also happen at the 1928 winter Olympics, the 1976 summer Olympics, the 1984 winter Olympics and the 1988 winter Olympics. Canada won one medal - the hockey gold - at these games. below is the poster for these games.

on this day in 1987

a wicked snow storm in the New York area produced two feet of snow, but that did not stop 334 people getting to the Brendan Byrne arena to see the New Jersey Devils beat the Calgary Flames 7-5. the start of the game was delayed until 9ET when both teams, officials and fans arrived at the game. there were vehicles that were still stuck on the roads that day. someone working for the arena went around the arena to get the adresses of all the fans that made it and "334 club" was started. the seats weren't closed off so the people sat anywhere in the arena. Doug Sulliman scored three goals for the Devils in the win. shown here is a couple of news clippings and a ticket stub of the game.

what a finish in Dallas

for the first three quarters Green Bay was dominating. Dallas made a furious comeback in the 4th to eventually even the game at 31-31. Tyler Terry's shootout performance was a bit like Jonathon Toews a few years ago. Tyler Parsons came up huge in the net when he needed the big save in the shootout. the U.S. will play for gold and Russia for bronze. both are tomorrow. coming up: Sweden vs Canada.

quarter final 4

this was a nail biter. Czech rep. scored the first goal of the game and led 1-0 after one, then it turned into a see-saw game. Canada pulls it out and wins 5-3 and will go to the semi finals against Sweden Wednesday night at 5:30pm Edmonton time. the U.S. and Russia semi final game is at 1pm Wednesday afternoon Edmonton time.

quarter final 3

the United States barely hung on to win over Switzerland 3-2. the U.S. went up 2-0 after the first period. Swizterland took over and had a flurry of chances - even had the game tied at two for a few seconds before the U.S. scored again - to even it late in the game. the U.S. will face Russia in one semi final game. coming up has Canada vs Czech Republic with the winner facing Sweden in the other semi final game.

quarter final 2

Sweden pretty much ran away with this one winning 8-3, although Slovakia made a game of this, scoring three in a row to make it 5-3 before Sweden responded and scored the last three. Sweden is in the semi finals for the 11th year in a row. they will face either the Czech Republic vs Canada game.

quarter final one

Russia beat Denmark 4-0 to open the quarterfinal round. Russia was just stronger today. first goal was scored right from center ice. they will play either the U.S. or Switzlerland. coming up has Sweden vs Slovakia. earlier Finland beat Latvia 2-1 in game one in the best of three relegation series.
