1953-54 NHL season

 The 1953-54 NHL season had 70 games and 6 teams.  December 9, Montreal and Toronto setca penalties record. Bernie Geoffrion of Montreal is barred to play against New York Rangers for remainder of season after a stick swinging incident that resulted in Ron Murphy with a broken jaw and concussion. Maurice Richard calls president Clarence Campbell a dictator. Richard is fined for that statement.  December 12 Richard collects 611th point, passing Elmer Lach on all time points list. James Norris trophy is awarded for first time. Red Kelly of Detroit wins it.  Harry Lumley has 13 shutouts, Terry Sawchuk has 12. Jean Beliveau makes his debut this season. Semi finals: Detroit 4 Toronto 1, Montreal 4 Boston 0. Stanley Cup: Detroit 4 Montreal 3. Montreal's Doug Harvey scores an own goal in overtime in game 7 to give Detroit the win. It's Detroit's 7th Stanley Cup.

Rangers blow away Hurricanes

 New York Rangers will be facing Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern conference finals after blowing away Carolina 6-2 in game 7.  New. York had also won game 6 5-2. Eastern conference finals start Wednesday. Western conference finals start tomorrow.

6 boxers going to Commonwealth games

 6 boxers are heading fir Birmingham England. They are: Keona-Ali-Al-Ahmadieh (mens 57kg), Wyatt Sanford (mens 63.5 kg), Keven Beausejour (mens 80kg), Jerome Feujida (mens 92 kg), Priyanka Dhillon (womens 48kg), and Tammara Thibeault (womens 75kg). Good luck in Birmingham.

Coca cola 600

 Denny Hamlin is the winner of NASCARs longest race. Quite the race and quite the triple header. Happy Memorial day state side.

Gold medal gane + Indy 500

 Finland takes gold in the world hockey championships, beating Canada 4-3 in overtime. Finland scored three on the power play, including the winner.  Canada had scored two in 48 seconds late in the third to tie it.  Congrats to Finland. Meanwhile in Indianapolis, Marcus Ericsson wins his first career Indianapolis 500. He led 13 laps. Pole sitter Scott Dixon led 95 laps and finished 21st. Congrats to Marcus Ericsson.  Coming up has the Coca Cola 600 from Charlotte North Carolina.

Monaco grand prix

 Sergio Perez is the winner of this year's shortened race.   Rain had delayed the start of it. Next up on the racing triple header is the Indianapolis 500. Should be running by now.

Bronze medal game

 Czech Republic beat the USA 8-4 to win bronze. Wow.  Was not expecting that one sided. Coming up - the gold medal game.

Canada vs Finland for gold

 Canada just beat Czech Republic 6-1 to advance to gold medal game. They will play Finland, who beat the USA 4-3. Czech Republic and USA will play for bronze. Both games are tomorrow morning here.

Avalanche buries Blues

 Two goals in the 3rd has Colorado Avalanche into the Western conference finals vs Edmonton after beating St Louis in game six 3-2 and the series 4-2. This should be a good matchup.  Nathan MacKinnon vs Connor McDavid. Series starts Tuesday.

Oliers douse Flames (or is it burn)

 The Edmonton Oilers are going to the Western conference finals after beating Calgary 5-4 in overtime in game 5 and the series 4-1. They will get either Colorado or St Louis next. Oh yeah their first conference finals since 2006.

Semi finals set

 Finland beat Slovakia 4-2 and USA beat Switzerland 3-0 in the other quarterfinals. The semifinals has USA vs Finland and Canada vs Czech Republic. Semis are on Saturday.

Canada to semis

 Canada came back and beat Sweden 4-3 in overtime. Canada was down 3-0 after two periods. Also Czech Republic beat Germany 4-1 in another quarter final. The other two quarters will decide the semifinals matchups.

Canada royts France, quarterfinals next

 Canada finishes the round robin beating France 7-1 and will be facing Sweden in the quarterfinals. The other match ups has Switzerland vs United States, Finland vs Slovakia and Germany vs Czech Republic. Quarterfinals are on Thursday.

Lightning strikes Panthers

 The Tampa Bay Lightning are into the Eastern conference final after finishing off a four game sweep of the Florida Panthers. Is it just me or did Tampa Bay make that look easy? Anyways they await the winner of the Carolina vs New York series.

A FIFA announcement

 FIFA will be making an announcement on June 16th. On that date FIFA will be announcing who will be hosting games for the 2026 World Cup. Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto are the Canadian candidate cities. Stay tuned for that announcement.

Canada lost to Denmark?

 It happened. Denmark win 3-2, handing Canada's second loss. 73 years Canada and Denmark have played each other and it's Denmark's first win over Canada. Denmark has done well at this tournament, as well as Switzerland and Germany.  Canada finishes off the round robin tomorrow vs France. Then the quarterfinals.

147th Preakness

 Early Voting was the winner in the middle jewel of the triple Crown. His time was 1:54.54. Luis Suarez was winning jockey and Chad C. Brown the winning jockey. Rich Strike did not run this race.  The Belmont Stakes are June 11th.

Canada suffers first loss

 Canada loses its first game, 6-3 to Switzerland.  Switzerland is a very good team. They have won all 5 of their games. Canada plays Denmark on Monday.

Canada 4 for 4

 Canada won their 4th game with a 6-3 win over Kazakhstan. So far so good. No surprises today.  Canada plays again Saturday vs Switzerland.

 7 parathletes going to the Commonwealth games.  They are: Alex DuPont, Josh Cassidy, Zachary Gingras, David Johnson, Tristan Smyth, Sarah Mickley and Jessica Frotten. Good luck in Birmingham to all

Austria doing some surprising

 Geez Austria has been competitive at the world hockey championships. Today they beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in overtime and this past Sunday they took the USA to a shootout before losing. They have 3 points after today's game.

Canada wins again

 Canada is now 3 for 3 after a 5-1 win over Slovakia. Bit if a barn burner. Canada plays again on Thursday vs Kazakhstan.

Flames burn Stars

 We will have a battle of Alberta as Calgary knocked out Dallas in overtime 3-2 in game 7. First battle of Alberta since 1991 when Edmonton won. Schedule out soon.

Rangers freeze Penguins

 The New York Rangers are into the second round after beating Pittsburgh in overtime 4-3 and will face Carolina next.  Schedule to be determined after the Calgary vs Dallas game.

Canada wins #2

 Canada beat Italy 6-1 for their second win at the world championships. Much better start than last year. Their next game is tomorrow vs Slovakia.

Oilers crown Kings

 The Edmonton Oilers are into the second round after beating the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 in game 7 and will face either Calgary or Dallas next. That game 7 is tomorrow.

Lightning strikes, burns Leafs

 The Tampa Bay Lightning just eliminated Toronto with a 2-1 win in game 7. They will face the Florida Panthers in i think their first ever playoff matchup. Coming up has Los Angeles vs Edmonton to end that series.

Carolina surges over Boston

 With a 3-2 win over Boston in game 7, the Carolina Hurricanes are into the second round. They will face either New York or Pittsburgh. That game 7 is tomorrow.

Panthers maul Capitals

 Florida Panthers knocked out Washington in overtime 4-3 and the series 4-2. They will get either Toronto ot Tampa Bay. Game 7 of that series is tomorrow.

World hockey championship opener

 Canada opened the world championships with a 5-3 win over Germany. Also the USA won 4-1, France won 4-1 and Finland won 5-0. Canada plats again on Sunday against Italy.

St.Louis tame Wild, maje them sing Blues

 St. Louis Blues are into the second round after beating Minnesota 5-1 in game six and series 4-2. They will play the Colorado Avalanche next. Start to be determined.

Angels no hit Rays

 Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels just finished no hitting the Tampa Bay Rays 12-0.  Detmers threw 108 pitches, walked one and struck out two. Angels defense commited one error. Angels had 18 hits with the 12 runs. Second bo hitter of the season.

Commonwealth weightlifters and table tennis players

 Two more were announced.  Start with weightlifting.  They are: Youri Simard, Shad Darsigny, Nicolas Vachon, Boady Santavy, Pierre Alexander Besette, Quinn Everett, Hannah Kaminski, Rachel LeBlanc-Bassinet, Tali Darsigny, Maude Charron, Maya Laylor, Kristel Ngarlem and Emma Friesen. Team was announced March 24th. Now for table tennis.  They are: Hungtao Chen, Jeremy Hazin, Edward Ly, Eugene Wang, Gina Fu, Sophie Gautier Katherine Morin, and Zhang Mo. Team was announced April 7th.

31 swimmers going to Commonwealth games

 Paralympian Aurele Rivard will be joining Penny Oleksiak, Maggie Mac Neil and Kylie Masse as they headline the 31 swimmers as they will be heading to Birmingham England for the Commonwealth games.  Swim team will have Paralympians and Olympians competing. Rest of the team: Sophie Angus, Katrina Bell, Tessa Cieplucha, Mary- Sophie Harvey, Ella Jansen, Summer McIntosh, Sydney Pickrem, Kayla Sanchez, Katrina Savard, Rebecca Smith, Nicholas Bennett, Camilla Berube, Alexander Eliot, Danielle Kisser, Katarina Roxon, Nicholas-Guy Turbide, Phillippe Vachon, Javier Acevedo, heremy Bagshaw, Emil Brown, Stephen Calkins, James Dergousoff, Collyn Gagne, Ruslan Gazliev, Patrick Hussey, Finlay Knox and Joshua Liendo. There is the swim team.

Avalanche sweep away Preds

 The Colorado Avalanche put the finishing touches on a 4 game sweep on Nashville, beating the Predators5-3 in game 4. Colorado made this series look easy.  Next up is either St. Louis or Minnesota.

One qualifying from last week

 Denmark is into the 2023 women's World Cup after Russia got pulled out of qualification for the invasion of Ukraine. Denmark is 11 points ahead of second with one game left for them.  That is now 11 of 32 teams in this world cup.

148th Kentucky Derby

 The annual run for the triple Crown began at "the run for the roses."  Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby with the time of 2:02.61.  Sonny Leon was winning jockey and Eric Reed was winning trainer. Next race is the Preakness on May 21.

1952-53 NHL season

 The 1952-53 NHL season had 70 games and 6 teams. The rival WHL started and went 22 seasons. League forced the NHL into expanding a few years later.  October 11 the first tv broadcast in Canada happened. The French broadcast showed Montreal beat Detroit 2-1. Tbe English version happened November 1 in what will eventually Hockey Night in Canada.  Glenn Hall, Jacques Plante, and Lorne " Gump" Worsley debuted.  November 3, Maurice Richard scores goal 325, becoming career leader in goals.  Gordie Howe scores 49 goals this season, almost tying Maurice Richard. Howe gets 95 points, the most in a season. The playoffs had: SF; Boston upsetting Detroit 4 games to 2 and Montreal beating Chicago 4-3. Montreal beats Boston 4-1 to win the Stanley Cup. It's their 7th championship.

Chef De Mission named

 Bruny Surin was named Canada's Chef De Mission for the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris. He will be the eyes and ears for the athletes. Great decision I think.  The road to 2024 have begun.

An olympic announcement coming

 This from Devin Heroux. The Canadian Olympic Committee will be announcing the Chef De Mission for Paris 2024 on Friday. Stay tuned for that. Another Olympic cycling has commenced.

Hello May.

 Well hello May.  What do you bring this month?  I see ypu have some NHL playoffs starting tonight. What? Nuce weather? Yes it's here now. 98% of the snow is gone. What else? You brought some baseball? Great. CFL training camps close you say? Excellent. Need some CFL football.  A bit of NASCAR you say? Thats nice. Anything else? How about some rain here?
