First game is in the books as host France beat South Korea 4-0.  Pretty much a no surpriser here.  Tomorrow has Nigeria vs Norway, Germany vs China and Spain vs South Africa.

Beginning of June means.........

......more baseball, end of hockey season, women's world Cup (begins on Friday), starting of the CFL (season begins on the 13th), the Belmont Stakes  (next Saturday), and the end of the NBA season.  I think that covers it.  Stay tuned for more.

End of May

Russia shoots out bronze, Finns take gold

14th Preakness

War of Will won the Preakness today.  Country House was not in this race with an infection while Maximum Security was withdrawn, with owner saying two week gap was not enough time to rest.  Winning time was 1:54.34, winning jockey was Tyler Gaffalione and winning trainer was Mark E. Casse.   Next race is the Belmont on June 8th.

Canada blows out Germany

It was all Canada in this one as they beat Germany 8-1 and goes to 4 and 1, now same record as Germany. Canada plays Denmark on Monday.

Bruins sweep Hurricanes away.

The Boston Bruins are in the Stanley Cup final after finishing off the Carolina Hurricanes in 4 straight. Oddly enough the final score tonight was 4-0.  Now Boston awaits the winner of the San Jose vs St Louis series.

Canada vs France

Canada beat France earlier 5-2 to go to 3 and 1.  Looked like a good game. Canada plays Germany on Saturday.  Germany is having a good tournament winning all 4 of their games.

Canada beats Slovakia

Canada wins a rather sloppy game, winning 6-5 over Slovakia.  They were down 2-0 and 4-2 before getting their act together.  Canada is 2 and 1.  Their next game is Thursday against France.

Canada dumps Britain

Canada blew out Great Britain 8-0 to even their record at a win and a loss.   Not much of a doubt.  Next game is tomorrow vs Slovakia.

Bruins maul and rip Jackets

The Boston Bruins are playing the Carolina Hurricanes in the eastern conference finals after knocking out the Columbus Blue Jackets in six games. Series schedule to be determined later.

145th Kentucky Derby

On a sloppy track,  Maximum Security wins the 145th edition of the Run For the Roses.  He pulled away down the stretch for the finish.  Winning time wad 2:03.93.  Luis Saez is winning jockey and William I. Moti is winning trainer.  Next race is the Preakness in two weeks. UPDATE:  Maximum Security was disqualified for impeding another horse.  Country House has been  declared winner, Flavien Prat the winning jockey and William I. Moti winning trainer.

The Carolina Hurricanes are going to the conference final after sweeping away the New York Islanders.  Carolina will play either Boston or Columbus.

MLB Stat of the day

Noah Syndergaard oh the N.Y. Mets became the first pitcher since Bob Welch in 1983 to throw a complete game 1-0 win AND hit a home run.  Wow.

Goodbye April hello May.

Geez April is gone.  May is here.  Things are slowly getting green here.  Seen some of the streets swept up already.  Bit of rain should clean up the remnants.  Wouldn't surprise me if it snowed again once or twice.  Snowed last night before I came home from work. When I got home and saw the snow on the porch I was thinking "no.  Just no."  My back was sore and I wasn't going to grab a shovel. It melted away anyways.  Should be a good month.

Hurricanes blow away Capital punishment

The Carolina Hurricanes are going to the second round after beating the Washington Capitals in double ot in game 7.  They will face the New York Islanders next.

Knights choke on lead, Sharks eat them for series.

The San Jose Sharks are heading for the second round after coming back from a 1-3 series deficit and trailing game 7 0-3 to win 5-4 in game and 4-3 in series.  The had 4 power play goals on a questionable cross check resulting in a 5 minute power play.  Anyway the Sharks play the Avalanche in the next round.  Should be a good one.

Bruins rake Leafs

The Boston Bruins are into the second round after eliminating Toronto in game 7. The will be playing Columbus next.

Stars kill Preds, plays Blues next

The Dallas Stars are into the second round after beating the Nashville Predators in game six and will now play the St Louis Blues in the second round. The series will start in St Louis.

A good Easter weekend

Twas a good Easter weekend here.  Besides working at Rickys on Friday and Superstore on Saturday,  I went to two Raiders playoff games vs the Oil Kings.  Raiders won game one 1-0 and the Oil Kings won game two 4-3 in ot.  Dad was at game one with me.  Dad and I also dug out 3 of the 4 planters yesterday and I got the last one today.  Boy is the wood ever rotted out. 😮.  The weekend went quick.

Blues make Jets fly

The St. Louis Blues are into the second round after beating the Winnipeg Jets in six games.  They will face either Dallas or Nashville next.

Avalanche douse Flames

The Colorado Avalanche are into the second round after dousing the Calgary Flames in 5 games. The Avalanche will face either San Jose or Vegas in the next round.

Jackets bottle Lightning, Islanders wash up Pens

The Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders both complete sweeps, the Lightning and Penguins are on the receiving end of those sweeps.  Who saw this coming? Crazy so far.

Gold medal game

The U.S beat Finland 2-1 in a shootout in what was apparantly one of the most bizarre, most controversial finishes ever.  (Disclaimer I did not see the game so I don't know what happened). The fans in Espoo Finland were pretty pissed from what I heard.  Ouch. That's it for this tournament.

Bronze game

This was a no doubter. Canada blew out Russia 7-0 to take home bronze.  They needed this result after yesterday's loss.  Coming up has the U.S. vs Finland for gold.

Semi final two

This one was a no doubter.  The U.S blew out Russia 8-0 and will face Finland for gold, while Russia plays Canada for bronze. Both games are tomorrow.

Semi final one

For the first time ever Finland will be playing for a championship as they beat Canada 4-2.  Finland is a resilient team.  They will await the winner of the U.S. vs Russia game.  That game starts shortly.

Quarter finals

Canada beat Germany 5-0 to go to semi finals. They will face either Finland or Czech Republic.  The U.S.  beat Japan 4-0 and will face either Russia or Switzerland.  Sweden beat France for 9th place.

Canada vs Finland

Canada walked away with a 6-1 win over Finland.  They will play Germany in the quarter finals. Other QF games has: US vs Japan,  Finland vs Czech Republic, and Russia vs Switzerland.  Sweden and France will play for 9th, despite both being relegated. All these games are on Thursday.

Ncaa championship game

Virginia are NCAA basketball Champs after beating Texas Tech 85-77.  Congrats to Virginia.

Canada vs Russia

Canada beat Russia 5-1 to go to 2 wins and a loss. Natalie Spooner had 3 goals and an assist in the win. The U.S. pretty much wrapped up group a, having beat Finland and Canada already.  Canada plays Finland tomorrow to finish round robin. Russia will finish 4th and Switzerland 5th in group a. In group b, Czech Republic leads with 9 pts, then Germany with 6, Sweden with 4, Japan with 3, and France with 2.  France is relegated and either Sweden or Japan will join them.  Other than Canada vs Finland,  it will be the U.S. vs Russia,  Sweden vs Japan  (to avoid relegation) and Czech Republic vs Germany for first in group b.

Mens world curling

Nik Edin of Sweden has beaten Kevin Koe to win the men's world championships winning 7-2. He got two in the 9th and stole 3 in the 10th to win it.  Edin is the first international skip to win 4 championships.  Three of those four on Canadian soil.  Fun fact,  Edin modeled his game while studying Kevin Martin.  So there ya go.

Nhl playoffs set.

All match ups are decided even though there are 4 games left in the season. The match ups are: Carolina vs Washington, Pittsburgh vs NY Islanders, Columbus vs Tampa Bay, Toronto vs Boston, Dallas vs Nashville, St Louis vs Winnipeg, Colorado vs Calgary and Vegas vs San Jose. Playoffs begin Wednesday. (I think)

Canada vs USA

Canada drops a good one to the U.S. losing 3-2.  The U.S. sits atop group a with two wins while Canada, Russia and Finland are at a win and a loss.  Canada's next game is Monday vs Russian while the U.S. plays Switzerland tomorrow.

Womens hockey championship

Canada opened with a 6-0 win over Switzerland.  Good start so far.  Meanwhile Germany beat Sweden 2-1 in a shootout. Wow.  Host Finland plays the U.S. later as well as France vs Japan. Canada plays again Saturday vs the U.S.

Fun curling fact

There have been 5 four time world champions - and all from Canada. They are: Randy Ferbey, Glenn Howard and the Richardson brothers  (Ernie, Garnet and Arnold).  Crazy eh.  Credit to Devin Heroux for fun fact.

March done

Geez last day of March already.  I think spring is here for good but who knows.  Let's see, what happened?  Baseball season began in Japan between Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners.  Ichiro Suzuki played his last game there.  Hockey is into the final stretch.  March Madness is into the final four.  Started working.  Figuring out Prince Albert slowly.  April means more baseball and postseason hockey.  And nicer weather.

An opening day record.

The Los Angeles Dodgers hit an opening day record 8 home runs in a 12-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Wow.

Opening day.

It's officially opening day in MLB.  Already two games done.  Mets won in Washington 2-0 while the Yankees beat Baltimore 7-2.  What awaits us during the season?  Stay tuned.  This season will be LIT!!!🔥🔥🔥

World womens finale

It went to an extra end.  Switzerland beats Sweden 8-7 to win this year's world's.   Meanwhile South Korea beat Japan 7-5 to take bronze.  Next year's tournament I believe is in Prince George B.C.

Womens world curling championship

It will be Sweden vs Switzerland for the final while South Korea will face Japan for bronze. Canada failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Yiye.  Chelsea Carey and her team went 6-6 in the tournament. Update on the final tomorrow.

One last upset

This time it's Ohio State beating Iowa State 62-59.  Ohio state will face Houston on Sunday.

A 4th upset

#12 Liberty just beat #5 Miss. State 80-76.  Top seeds are slowly dropping like flies.  Last 4 games are on. We'll see how the night finishes.

And a third upset unless you're cheering for Oregon

The #12 Oregon Ducks score another upset with a 72-54 win over Wisconsin.  They get #13 UC Irvine on Sunday.

Day 2 has another upset

Day two so far has another upset as #13 UC Irvine beat #4 Kansas State 70-64.  Wow.  Maybe more to come.

First full day of march madness produces first upset

The first on just happened in the west bracket as #12 Murray St. beat #5 Marquette 83-64. They will get Florida State in the next round on Saturday. There is more action tonight.

Spring is here

Spring makes its official arrival at 3:58pm today.  The nice weather will welcome it.  The slow snow melt is on.  The piles of snow seem smaller and there isn't much snow and ice on the roads either.  Feels good.

Tokyo 2020 olympic torch.

Image
Here is what the torch looks like. It is based on the cherry blossom motif.  The relay starts this time next year during cherry blossom season.

A good day

A good day today.   First off I got a job.  Starting next week as a dishwasher. Better than sitting on my ass all day. I live close enough to there where I walked to an from the interview.  Plus I went for a long walk later on.  +9 and the sun out I figured a walk was needed.  A good day.

nhl stat of the day

the Tampa Bay Lightning became the 12th team to reach 55 wins in a season, AND the fourth in last 22 seasons to reach that win.  and with 10 games left, they could be the 3rd team to hit 60 (Montreal in 1976-77 and Detroit in 1995-96).  scary stuff. and quite impressive.

happy St. Patricks day

happy St. Patricks Day.  that annual time of the year where a lot of green comes out.  even the grass.  that time of the year where everyone is Irish for a day.  I think the Chicago river is green again.  and green beer.  enjoy the day

500 days to go

500 days to go to the opening of the Tokyo 2020 summer games.  500 days of qualifying for the games, whether its rugby 7s, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, swimming, or whatever.  500 days before the summer games gets LIT🔥.  (Devin Heroux would be proud of the lit up)

Kevin Koe Brier champ

the team of Kevin Koe, B.J. Neufeld, Colton Flasch and Ben Hebert are Brier champs after scoring two in the 10th to beat the wild card Brendan Bottcher team 4-3.  the Koe team will be representing Canada at the worlds in Lethbridge from March 30 to April 7.  Koe is the fourth skip to win 4 Briers, after Ernie Richardson, Kevin Martin and Randy Ferbey did it.  wow.

an all Alberta Brier final

wild card Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton score two in the 10th end after a double tap back to get the second shot and beat Brad Jacobs of northern Ontario 5-4 and will face Kevin Koe of Calgary for the Brier championship.  gonna be a good one tonight.

fun baseball fact.

Bob Montgomery of the Boston Red Sox was the last player to bat helmetless.  he played with the Red Sox from 1970-79. in 1971 batting helmets became mandatory, yet active players were allowed to bat without one using a grandfather clause.  Montgomery used a protective lining inside his cap to strengthen it.  his last game was September 9, 1979.

a hell of a start

Brad Gushue and his rink from Newfoundland and Labrador, representing Canada, put 7 points in the first end.  what a start.  Devin Heroux looked up some info and find out 7 in the first end has happened six previous times - the last in 2000 when PEI stole 7 against Nova Scotia.  wow.

a Wednesday night

spending a Wednesday night watching Survivor, and afterwards going to watch the second half of Gordon Ramsay's 24 hours to hell and back.  that show has Ramsay coming to a dysfunctional restaurant and has 24 hours to turn their fortunes around.  also I am keeping and eye on the final group B games and a chance of a potential tiebreak.   already a good night shaping up.

a stat on top of upset (unless you're Yukon)

Jon Solberg was the last skip from Yukon to beat Manitoba when he did it in 2002 when the Yukon/NWT team beat Mark Lukowich 11-10.  until today.  he and his Yukon rink beat Manitoba 7-6 and is tied with Manitoba at 2-2 sitting in 4th.  yiye.  all stats and info from Devin Heroux on twitter.

big time Brier comeback + a birthday = a weekend

first the birthday.  yesterday my blog turned 15. 15 years of baseball, hockey, NASCAR, football, Olympics and other random stuff that has happened.  eep.  here's to 15 more years - perhaps. now for the comeback.  Brandon Bottcher (in as a wild card) was down 5-0 and beat Manitoba 9-8 in an extra end.  wow.  the comeback tied the biggest Brier comeback.  1980 was the last time that happened.  yiye.  and the Brier just started this weekend.  should be a good week coming up.

end of the month

shit, where did February go?  what happened?  Patriots win snooze fest of a Super Bowl, spring training baseball has started, as did the NASCAR season.  Chelsea Carey wins Scotties tournament of Hears and will represent Canada at the world curling championships, loads of hockey, and still cold out (figures for Canada.  even though -14 today isn't that bad really.).  awesome to see my sister after 20+ years, as well as dad and step mom.  March brings the Brier starting tomorrow, more hockey, more car racing, more exhibition baseball and what ever else.

Alberta steals their way to championship.

the team of Chelsea Carey, Sarah Wilkes, Dana Ferguson and Rachelle Brown capped of the biggest comeback to win 8-6 in an extra end.  Alberta was trailing 5-1 after 4 ends.  Alberta got a point in the 5th, stole a point in the 6th and 7th, gave up a point in the 8th, got that point back in the 9th, stole one in the 10th to tie it and stole 2 in the 11th after Rachel Homan was light on her last shot.  yikes.  they will represent Canada at the world women's championships in Silkeborg Denmark from March 16-24.

the roar of the rings

the Canadian Olympic curling trials - or the roar of the rings - will be in Saskatoon in 2021.  that announcement was mad about roughly 15 to 20 minutes ago.  countdown to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing is on.

Jennifer Jones sets Scotties record

in her final game of the Scotties this year,  Jennifer Jones of Manitoba (although playing in Canada colours) set an all time Scotties record with her 141st win, passing Colleen Jones (don't know if they are related) for the record.  wow.

the hosts of the 2020 and 2021 Grey cups are.....

Saskatchewan and Hamilton.  both places were chosen an hour ago.  Mosaic Stadium in Regina in 2020 and Tim Hortons field in Hamilton in 2021.  Saskatchewan last hosted in 2012 while Hamilton last hosted in 1996.  so there ya go.

High scoring affair.

PEI and New Brunswick set a Scotties record for most points in a game as PEI wins 13-12.  Yikes.  Insane.  All these updates I am getting from Devin Heroux on Twitter. (Give him a follow. You won't regret it).

Another Scotties surprise.

Canada's Jennifer Jones lost both of her games at the Scotties today.  First from Prince Edward Island and then to New Brunswick.  She is at 2 wins and 2 losses.  Wow.

A first at the Scotties.

First full day of the Scotties women's curling tournament and it's produced a first.  Nunavut wins its first Scotties game ever with a 4-3 win over Quebec. Congrats to Megan Ingram, Allison Griffin,  Jennifer Blaney, Jenine Boder, and coach Susanne Martin - the first of hopefully many wins.

Hockey day in Canada

It's hockey day in Canada. This year Swift Current is host city. Feature games has Winnipeg at Ottawa  (on now), Toronto at Montreal at 6pm, San Jose at Edmonton also at 6pm,  and Calgary at Vancouver at 9pm. (All times Prince Albert times).  Results later. Update 1.  Ottawa 5 Winnipeg 2 Update 2.  Toronto 4 Montreal 3 (OT) San Jose 5 Edmonton 2. Update 3.  Vancouver 4 Calgary 3 (SO). That is it for another hockey day in Canada.

On this day....

In 1976 Darryl Sittler scored 6 goals and had 4 assists as Toronto beat Boston 11-4.  The 10 points still stands as an NHL record. The 6 goals tied Red Berenson for the modern day record.  Joe Malone has the all time record with 7.

Patriots win Super bowl.

The New England Patriots are Super bowl Champs after beating the L.A. Rams 13-3 in the lowest scoring super bowl since super bowl VII when Miami beat Washington 14-7.  Pretty dull game as well.  That's it for another NFL season. Nascar starts in a couple of weeks.

A little behind here.

So it's time for a game of catch up (or is it ketchup). Anyways its #BellLetsTalk day. What else happened in January?  The Super Bowl finalists were decided as the Rams and Patriots duke it out. Loads of hockey, with Finland wining the world juniors to the NHL all star game.  My move to Prince Albert and a reminder of how cold the prairies get.  February should be fun. I hope.

Cowboys lasso Seahawks.

The Cowboys are moving on after beating Seattle 24-22. Seattle made it interesting late.  Dallas will get either New Orleans or The Rams in the divisional.

Finland golden

Finland are 2019 world junior champs after beating the U.S. 3-2 in a good one.  Cant remember how many Finland has won.   Next tourney is in the Czech Republic in the cities of Ostrava and Trinic.

Wild card 1.

Indianapolis is into the divisional round after beating Houston 21-7.  I think they are heading to Kansas City to face the Chiefs.  Coming up is Seattle at Dallas.

Bronzed Russians

Russia wins bronze after a 5-2 win over Switzerland.  Pretty surprised it was as close.  Coming up is the gold medal game.

Semi final 2

Finland wins a no doubter 6-1 over Switzerland and will face the U.S. for gold tomorrow night while Switzerland plays Russia for bronze.

Semi final one

The U.S. will be playing for gold after knocking off The Russians 2-1.  They will face either Finland or Switzerland tomorrow night while Russia face the loser for bronze.

Kazakhs relegate Danes

With a 4-0 win,  Kazakhstan wins best of three relegation series 2-0.  Kazakhstan be in next years tournament while Denmark is relegated to division 1.

quarter final 4 no doubter

this was all Russia all night as they win 8-2 and will face the U.S. in the semis.  both this and the Switzerland/Finland games are on Friday with the winners playing for gold and losers play for bronze.  so that is it for the quarters.

quarterfinal 3 not much of a surprise here

another close one here. the U.S. ends up beating the Czech Republic 3-1 to get to the semi finals.  they will face either Russia or Slovakia in the semis.  than game should be starting shortly.

Another quarterfinal surprise

Canada had a 1-0 for almost half the game.  Finland ties it with 46 seconds left in the third.  Canada has a chance at one end had has a stick break.  Finland goes the other way and scores.  Finland wins 2-1.  Finland will face the Swiss in the semis.  Canada has to watch the rest of the tournament.   Wow.  This will sting.

first quarterfinal produces an upset

and the upset goes to Switzerland as the just beat Sweden 2-0 to go to the semi finals.  last time they were in the semis was 2010.  they lost to Canada in the semis and lost the bronze medal game to Sweden.  huge upset here.
