on this day

in 1982 Earl Weaver penciled in Cal Ripken Jr to start at third base.  that began a 17 year 2632 consecutive games streak.  he broke Lou Gehrig's record on September 6, 1995 against the California Angels at Camden Yards. the game was the most watched game on ESPN. Ripken was given a 22 minute ovation from the crowd, all four umpires and the Angels orginization.  during the ovation Ripken did a lap on the warning track shaking hands and high-fiving some of the crowd.  the streak ended on September 20 1998 against the Yankees when he pulled himself from the lineup. he played his last career game October 6 1999 at home.
