First the silver. Brent Lakatos takes it in the T53 400m event. Yes. Now the bronze in the 4x100m relay-34points event. From what I read from Devin Heroux, Canada had finished fifth.  It was found that both Great Britain and United States both got disqualified for early exchange in the second exchange.  USA protested. Protest was denied. The team of Katarina Roxon, Morgan Bird, Sabrina Duchesne and Aurelie Rivard gets the bronze. After 5 days, that is now 1g, 6s 4b for 11 total.

Bronzed triathlete

Stefan Daniel picked up a bronze in the para triathlon.  Gutsy effort by the looks of it after he collapsed once he crossed the finish line.  He is okay though.  That is now 1g, 5s and 4b for nine overall.

Silver on the track

This one courtesy of Brent Lakatos. He takes it in the T54 5000m race. Also his 8th career medal. That is now 1g, 5s and 2b for 8 total.

This one goes to Tristen Chernove in the C1 3000m individual pursuit. That makes 1s and 2b for 3 total.

Women's worlds day six

In group B, Hungary just beat Denmark 5-1 and will finish 4th in the group and Denmark 5th. Also 9th and 10th overall.  Also in group B, Czech Republic beat Germany 2-0 and will finish first in the group and will face the third place team in group A.  Germany plays Japan tomorrow for second and third. Group A had Finland beat Russia 4-0. Tomorrow Finland vs Switzerland to decide 3rd, 4th and 5th, while USA vs Canada will decide top spot in group A. Nitty gritty time

A second medal

This one in the pool. Aurelie Rivard gets a bronze in the 50m S10 event. Yeees.  That is now 2b so far.  Not a bad start to the Paralympics so far.

Canada has a bronze

Canada just got its first medal and it's a bronze from Keely Shaw from Mildale Saskatchewan. She got it in the C4 3000m track cycling race.  Yippee.  And we're on the board. (Thanks to Devin Heroux).

Hungary and Denmark will not qualify for the quarterfinals.  In group A, the USA beat Russia 6-0 and Canada beat Switzerland 5-0. USA and Canada have 9 points, easily into the quarterfinals, Russia with three points and Finland and Switzerland have none.  Oddly Finland and Switzerland will go to the quarterfinals. (Odd setup with all of group A are into quarters plus top three in group B).  Tomorrow has Russia vs Finland (group A), Czech Republic vs Germany (group B) and Denmark vs Hungary (group B).

2020(1) Paralympics underway

The cauldron has been lit. Speeches made. Performances were done. 4403 athletes and 165 nations at the Paralympic Games. Priscilla Gagne led 128 Canadians during the parade of nations. Action begins tonight in Canada. Who will be Canada's first medallist? Who will win the first medals of The games? Stay tuned.

Getting down to the nitty gritty here.

Day three women's worlds

Night cap had the USA beat Finland 3-0. Earlier Canada beat Russia 5-1.  Both the USA and Canada have six points, Russia has three, Finland and Switzerland have none.  Only group B game had Czech Republic beat Hungary 4-2. Czech Republic has six points, Germany and Japan have three (both played one game), Hungary and Denmark have none. Tomorrow has Germany vs Denmark and Japan vs Czech Republic. Until then.....

Women's worlds day two

Interesting one here as Japan beat Denmark 1-0.  Bit of a surprise.  Also in group B, Germany beat Hungary 3-0. Czech Republic, Germany and Japan all have three points. In group A, Russia beat Switzerland 3-1, while last night the USA also beat Switzerland 3-0. Switzerland has two losses, while USA, Canada and Russia have three points. Tomorrow has Canada vs Russi (group A), USA vs Finland (group A) and Hungary vs Czech Republic (group B).

1942-43 NHL season

The 1942-43 season had 6 teams and had a 50 game season.  USA and Canada governments wanted sports to keep going as WWII raged on.  WWII ravaged all teams.  November 21, 1942 overtime was ended due to wartime travel restrictions as teams needed to get to trains on time.  February 4, 1943 Frank Calder dies of a heart attack.  Red Dutton becomes president. Playoffs format has 1st place vs 3rd place and 2nd vs 4th and semi final winners play for Stanley Cup.  Semis had Detroit beat Toronto 4-2 and Boston beat Montreal 4-1.  Stanley Cup finals had Detroit beat Boston 4-0.  It's their third cup victory.

The flag bearer at the Paralympics is......

Priscilla Gagne as she leads the 128 member delegation at Tuesday's opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics. It's getting real now.

Women's ice hockey opener

Canada opened with a 5-3 win over Finland after trailing 2-0. Finland has played Canada fairly well the last two or three years.  Earlier Czech Republic beat Denmark 6-1 in pool b action. Switzerland vs USA will round out day one (also group a, which is Canada's group). Canada plays again Sunday vs Russia.  Tomorrow has Russia vs Switzerland (group A), Germany vs Hungary (group B) and Denmark vs Japan (group B).

Mid month musings

Gonna be a good couple of weeks. Friday starts the women's world ice hockey championships (finally. Been looking forward to this). Next Tuesday starts the Paralympics. The 26th starts the final Olympic hockey qualification in men's hockey (3 teams to round out the Olympic tournament), and the women begin their hockey qualification (Iceland, Hong Kong, Bulgaria and Lithuania to try to move to the second round).  Fun times ahead.

First no hitter in awhile

Tyler Gilbert, in his first start, threw a no hitter as Arizona beat San Diego 7-0. He is the fourth pitcher to start his MLB career with a no hitter.  He had 5 strike outs and had three walks. Wow.

Paralympic numbers and could there be an upgrade

All from Devin Heroux. First the numbers.  Canada will be sending 128 Paralympians to Tokyo.  Also 4237 among 96 nations will be heading there.  As for the potential upgrade? In the men's 4x100m relay in which Canada got a bronze, one of the silver medal Great Britain runners may have been caught with a banned substance in his system. If true, the British team will lose silver, Canada upgraded to silver and whomever finished 4th will get bronze.

By the numbers

Here are some numbers of Canada at the Olympics. 1. 600.  Amount of minutes Kadeisha Buchanan played (not including stoppage time) in all of Canada's games. 2. 304. Amount of international games Christine Sinclair had played. 3. 17.  Amount of years since Malindi Elmore's last Olympics appearance (2004 Athens). 4. 36. Amount of hours before competition before Annie Guglia found out she was going to Tokyo. 5. 6.  Amount of events that Andre DeGrasse has competed in and won medals in (3 in Rio, 3 in Tokyo).  Also amount of medals in track and field won in Tokyo - the most ever. 6.  0.064.  amount of seconds Kelsey Mitchell won by to win her gold. 7. 236.  Combined weight Maude Charron lifted on her way to gold. 8. 9018. Amount of points Damian Warner picked up on his way to gold, an Olympic record.

Closing ceremony

The closing ceremony are done.  Speeches have been made. Performances had. Handover from Tokyo to Paris, followed by the Paris presentation. Flame extinguished. USA finished with most medals at 113, followed by China at 88, then Russia at 71. Canada finishes with 7g, 6s and 11b for 24 medals.  Paralympics coming up in a couple of weeks. Next winter Games in February 2022 in Beijing, then the summer games in Paris in 2024.

Golden track cycler

Kelsey Mitchell just picked up Canada's 7th gold as she won the sprint portion of track cycling. I read that ties the most golds in a non boycott year. Anyways that is 7g, 6b and 11b for 24 medals.

Closing ceremony flag bearer

Damian Warner has been chosen to carry the Canadian flag at the closing ceremony, which is in about 12 hours. He 1. Became 4th (?) decathlete to score 9000+ points, 2. Scored the third highest total (9018), which 3. won him gold.  Loads of good quality choices.

Canoeing to a bronze

Laurence Vincent Lapointe and Katie Vincent just picked up Canada's 11th bronze, coming in third in the C2 500m event. The 11 bronze goes with 6g and 6s for 23 total.  The 23 overall is now the highest total in a non boycott Olympics.  They had 44 in 1984, but that was the Soviet led boycott for the Jimmy Carter led boycott in 1980.

Golden soccer

It went to a sudden death shootout. Julia Grosso becomes hero as she scored the gold medal winner as Canada beats Sweden 3-2 in said shootout. First ever gold medal game and they're coming home champions. WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!  That is now 6g, 6s and 10b for 22 medal. The 22 medals ties 2016 and 1996 for most in a non boycott year.

Bronzed 4x100m

The team of Andre DeGrasse, Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney and Jerome Blake just captured another bronze.  The Italians beat out Great Britain for gold by .01.  Yikes.  That is now 5g, 6b and 10b for 21 medals

A 5000m silver.

This comes from Mo Ahmed as he crossed the line in 12:58.61.  Yes.  That is now 5g 6s 9b for 20 medals

Bronzed walker.

Evan Dunfee has just picked up a bronze in the 50k race walk. He's the first Canadian to win a medal in this race. Also some major redemption for 2016.  This is also the last time this race will be contested.  That is now 5g, 5s an 9b for 19 medals.  Yeeeeeeessssss.

Golden decathlete

Damian Warner is Olympic champion, winning the decathlon with an Olympic record of 9018 points (also a personal best. I believe also the third highest point total). Pierce LePage finished fifth. That is now 5g, 5s and 8b for 18 total. WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Bronzed cycler

Lauriane Genest has picked up a bronze in track cycling, the Keirin event (no idea how that works). That is now 4g, 5s, and 8b for 17 medals.  Yes.

Olympic stat of the night.

In mens shot put, Ryan Crouser of the USA, Joe Kovacs of the USA and Tomas Walsh of New Zealand finished gold, silver and bronze tonight.  It was the exact same order in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Crouser first, Kovacs second, Walsh third. First time in Olympics history in any individual event, the podium finish stayed the same in back to back Olympic Games. What are the odds?

Silver canoer

Laurence Vincent Lapointe just picked up a silver in the first women's canoe C1 race.  Her time was 46.786.  That is now 4g, 5s and 7b for 16 medals.  Yay.

Golden DeGrasse

Andre DeGrasse is 200m Olympic champion, winning with a Canadian record time of 19.62.  He is the first Canadian to win the 200 since 1928 when Percy Williams did it.  WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO.  That is now 4g, 4s and 7b for 15 medals

Day 10 done

We're 10 days in. Big story is Canada beating the United States in the soccer semis.  It will be: 1. The first time ever Canada will be playing for gold and 2: first time Canada beat the USA since March 2001. Overall medals has USA with 64, China with 62, Russia with 50, Great Britain with 35, and Japan and Australia with 33 (Japan 17g vs Australia 14). Canada stays at 3g, 4s, 7b for 14 medals.

Women's soccer playing for gold

It's actually happening. Canada has beaten the United States 1-0 in the first semi and WILL BE PLAYING FOR GOLD.  YEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!  They will play either Australia or Sweden.  Gold medal game is Friday.

While I was at the lake

Andre DeGrasse won bronze in the 100m, and the 4x100m individual medley of Penny Oleksiak, Sydney Pickrem, Maggie Mac Neil and Kylie Masse won bronze as well.  Oleksiak became Canada's most decorated athlete with seven Olympic medals.  Yes.  We now have 3g, 4s and 7b for 14 medals.  Now I think I'm caught up.
