most decorated athete ever with two medals (a silver and a gold in team relay), michael phelps passed larrisa latanya of russia (she did it as part of the soviet union) for most olympic medals.  she had 18, phelps now has 19.  wow.  congrats.
a bronze hat trick three of them today.  the first one came from christine gerard in the weightlifing 63 kg class.  that was canada's first ever medal in weightlifing.  the second came from antoine valois-fortier in judo 81 kg class and the third one came in the 10m synchro diving courtesy of meaghan benfeito and roseline fillion.  congrats to all.  that brings canada's total to four medals - all bronze.
teenage swimmer goes golden ruta meilutyte of lithiuania won gold in the 100m breaststroke in 1:05.47.  shes only 15.  wow.  i think she surprised herself.  someone that young to win gold is great.  congrats to her.  she made her country proud.  it is lithiuania's first ever swimming gold as well. meanwhile 17 year old missy franklin of the u.s. won gold in the backstroke.  she also has ties in canada.  she has an aunt living in nova scotia.  congrats to her.
brickyard 400 jimmie johnson dominated in indianapolis and won going away by over 4 seconds over kyle busch.  i think he  was untouchable today.  it is his fourth win in indy in his career tying him with jeff gordon.  dale earnhardt jr finished fourth and now is the points leader after matt kenseth was involved in an earlier wreck.  defending champ tony stewart finished 10th and is ninth in the points.
canada gets bronzed in syncro diving emelie heymans and jennifer abel  just picked up canada's first medal at the olympics with a bronze in syncro diving.  they went from 5th to third in the last two dives even though they were a bit out of sych.  heymans became the first canadian to win a medal in four consecutive olympics (2000 sydney, 2004 athens, 2008 beijing and now 2012 london).  congrats to both abel and heymans.
swimming surprises some surprises in the pool.  first was ryan lochte winning the 400m IM and michael phelps finishing fourth, the first time he failed to medal since sydney in 2000.  in the 4 x 100m medley the american women finished with the bronze after leading through most of the race.  australia won gold and netherlands got the silver.  a korean earlier in the day was originally disqualified after false starting (i think it was another 400m event) allowing ryan cochrane into the final. but the korean appealed and the decision to dq him was overturned allowing him into the final (top eight overall from the semis go to the final) and ryan cochrane missed out.  so some stories in the pool so far.  no medals for canada on day one so far.  there are a few events left for the day.
morning of day one, first gold goes to....... .... yi siling of china.  she won ir in the 10m air rifle event.  i think thats their first ever in that event.  meanwhile michael phelps barely made it to the 400m final.  he got in just over 4m13s.  just watched russia beat china in womens beach volleyball.  more medals to be handed out later.  hopefully canada wins one or two.
london 2012 opening ceremonies the games are officially under way as the couldron got lit in the most unique way.  during the parade of nations a copper petal got carried in with each nation and was placed in the middle of the infield. seven young people then lit their designated petal and each one lit up afterwards and the petals ended up rising up.  where it will be placed afterwards i do not know.  the queen opened the games before hand.  paul mccartney is now singing away with hey jude.  let the 16 days of insanity begin
48 hours to london 2012 we're less than 48 hours to the opening ceremonies of the london 2012 summer olympics and im ready to go.  im excited for it to begin.  16 days of high tension competition and loads of medals won.  the opening ceremonies itself should be good. plus 204 nations entering and the queen officially opening.  ctv will be airing the ceremonies starting at 2pm edmonton time and the replay at 7pm edmonton time.
izod edmonton indy helio cstroneves just put the wraps one the edmonton indy beating out takuma sato definitely redeeming himself from a block penalty issued to him two years ago.  alex tagliani led most of the race until last pit stop when he came out second.  tags finished fifth.  ryan hunter-reayh ad the pole originally but was penalized 10 spots for an illegal engine. he finished 8th.  there were no cautions in this one either.  congrats to helio.

lenox industrial tools 400 kasey kahne wins his second race of the year and first career win in new hampshire by beating out a charging denny hamlin to the checkers.  hamlin owned most of the race until the last stop had some miscommunication on last stop.  points leader matt kenseth finished 13th and still holds a 16 point lead over dale earnhardt jr, who finished 4th.  jimmie johnson finished 7th (he got caught on pit road with the cast caution coming out, fell a lap down and got the lucky dog to get lap back coming out 17th) and still sits 4th in the points.  defending champ tony stewart finished 12th and fell to 5th in the points.  next race is in idianapolis on july 29th and the crown royal 400
corn maze to open in two weeks the edmonton corn maze is to open in two weeks and the maze design will be announced next week.  the corn is already planted and growing and the maze was dug out.  last picture i've seen was the corn was waist high.  that was last week.  more info at http://www.edmontoncornmaze.ca/ .  enjoy.
dog days of summer - literally man its been on the warm side the past week.  it's supposed to cool off until tuesday when it gets hot again.  early yesterday morning had a wild thunderstorm that flooded part of the whitemud freeway, some streets in mill woods and unfortunately flooded out a few apartments there as well.  feel bad for them.  even a parking lot at one building got flooded. today some smoke from a couple of forest fires in northern alberta came in.  it was worse close to lunchtime.  it's not so bad now, but there still is smoke around.  in two weeks is the beginning of the summer olympics in london.  the opening ceremonies are on july 27th - same day as my sister's birthday.
heat wave needs pools here we're in the beginnings of a bit  of a heat wave.  temps around 30c.  down east they've had temps in the 30s for a couple to three weeks PLUS they had a nasty storm in the eastern u.s. that knocked out power last week.  hopefully the power is back on there.  that was supposed to get done by this past friday.  humidex readings were into the 40s.  ugh.  nasty heat plus no power equals awful situation.  stay safe.
coke zero 400  a wild and crazy ass finish to this one as tony stewart wins the coke zero 400.  he kept his lead on the last restart with two to go and as everyone was going to the checkers, everyone was wrecking behind stewart.  it is tony's fourth coke zero 400 win and he went from 42nd to win it.  jeff burton came out second and matt kenseth finished third.  kenseth keeps his points lead. he is now up 25 pts on dale earnhardt jr.  jimmie johnson was in an earlier wreck and finished 36th.  he is fourth in the points.  next race is in loudon new hampshire and the LENOX industrial tools 301 a week from tomorrow
spain defends euro title spain defends their euro title from 2008 with a civincing 4-0 win over italy in kiev, ukraine.  it was all spain today.  all their goal scorers were from four different players - even from two substitutions.  four goals in a win is the most beating out west germany's three from 1972.  the win is spains third title, 1964, 2008 and 2012.  congrats.
happy canada day happy canada day to all canadians in canada and everywhere else.  canada turns 145 today.  hopefully some fireworks tonight.  it's raining here now and i heard some thunder a little while ago.  maybe some nature fireworks as well.  cheers eh.
