50 in 39 games

25 years ago tonight wayne gretzky scored 5 goals against the philadelphia flyers and broke an nhl record shared by maurice richard and mike bossy. the fifth goal was into the empty net, which made it 50 in 39. the old record was 50 in 50 (by richard and bossy). gretzky scored 92 in the 1981-82 season. those records i doubt will be broken.

chase utley's hit streak

pepsi 400

what a finish to this race. with 9 laps to go and boris said leading after the green flag comes out, out of nowhere comes tony stewart from 10th to 2nd. he eventually passes boris with 3 to go and defends his pepsi 400 from one year ago. he is now fifth in the points. jimmie johnson got involved with bobby labonte (okay so johnson got loose with three cars around him). he finished 32nd and saw his lead shrink to 13 points over matt kenseth after kenseth finished 6th. boris said ended up 4th. if i remember right, at this time last year tony stewart got hot and won the championship starting at the pepsi 400. he could do it again this year. quite the fun race.

total madness. ottawa beat the rangers 5-1, carolina lost to buffalo 4-0, new jersey came back from 3-0 down to beat montreal 4-3, philadelphia beat the islanders 4-1 and tampa bay lost to washington 4-1. all those results tonight produced these round one matchups: #1 ottawa vs #8 tampa bay, #2 carolina vs #7 montreal, #3 new jersey vs # 6 n.y. rangers and #4 buffalo vs #5 philadelphia. buffalo had their spot locked up a couple or three days ago. playoffs start friday night.

a great cbc film

i finished watching a two part series on cbc. canada/russia '72 was the name of the movie. it was almost like watching the 8 game series. it was exactly like what happened in 1972. considering i was born two years later, i can watch the highlites. gotta get the dvd series. canada won the eight game series with four wins, three losses and a tie. paul henderson scored the game winner the last three games of the series. quite the series.

florida gators ncaa champions

the florida gators blew out the ucla bruins 73-55. it was all florida from the get go. it is florida's first championship.
direcTV 500 and opening night in baseball

tony stewart held off a late charge from jeff gordon, jimmie johnson, dale earnhardt jr and kyle busch to win the direcTV 500 in martinsville. quite the exciting finish. in the end tony had the car. he led most of the race. the win moves tony to 8th in the points. jimmie johnson leads mark martin by 59 points, while matt kenseth crashed and fell to 3rd in the points. kasey kahne and kurt busch round up the top five.

meanwhile in chicago, the white sox opened their season with a 10-4 win over the cleveland indians which involved a LENGTHY rain delay. the game ended a few minutes ago. time to go get some shut eye now.

Saturday, April 01, 2006

first saturday of april

hockey time. watching buffalo @ toronto. toronto leads 5-0 after one period. later its calgary @ edmonton in the second game of the cbc hockey night in canada double header. the final four tourney resumes with george mason playing florida (currently playing), while lsu plays ucla later. the winners play in the final on monday night. an interesting tidbit in regards to the battle of alberta. the last time edmonton and calgary met in the playoffs was 1991. both teams have never been in the playoffs the same year since. crazy eh? something to mull on.

update 1: toronto 7 buffalo 0 final. and florida ended george mason's cinderella run with a 73-58 win. its halftime between lsu and ucla.

update 2: ucla beat lsu 59-45 and will face florida in the final on monday night.

end of march

another march gone. loads of hockey. (watching calgary and colorado). spring training baseball, while japan won the world baseball classic. the ncaa tournament started. the final there is monday. nascar racing (boy was bristol fun or what). and the major snowstorm that came. snow is melting. the buried bush (okay two bushes) are out. still puddles laying around. april brings the start of baseball season (starts sunday), more car racing, the end of the nhl season and the start of the nhl playoffs and the end of the ncaa tourney. entertainment o' plenty.

Sunday, March 26, 2006

food city 500

wild finish at bristol. im mean crazy. kurt bush bumps matt kenseth out of the way and won a pretty wild one. kevin harvick finished 2nd and kenseth was third. after busch went by, kenseth and jeff gordon was battling for position, gordon goes by and kenseth puts the bumper to him. gordon finished 21st. gordon and martin truex jr were battling side by side, and tony stewart was behind it. stewart didnt want to do it, but he knocked truex out of the way. tony didnt want to be part of a brewing accident. jimmie johnson would like to have this one back after a lap one tire issue and a penalty on pit road for his crew jumping out a little early. anyways, matt kenseth now leads the points by 8 points over kasey kahne and over jimmie johnson by 19. tony is now 9th in the points, 181 pts back. next race is in martinsville, next week. hopefully by then, my head will stop spinning from all the madness in bristol. time for some shut eye.
the rest of the final four

it will be george mason vs florida in the other final four matchup on saturday. george mason beat conneticut 86-84 in overtime. florida knocked off villanova 75-62. all #1 seeds are gone. did i mention there will be a new champion with north carolina getting knocked out already? i did now.

Saturday, March 25, 2006

half of final four set

it will be lsu tigers vs ucla bruins in one semi final game on april 1. lsu beat texas 70-60 in overtime and ucla beat memphis 50-45 (another #1 seed gone). the rest will be decided tomorrow.

Friday, March 24, 2006

the rest of the elite eight

conneticut beat washington 98-92 in overtime. they got a 3 with 1.8 seconds left in the 2nd half to get to overtime. villanova also went to overtime before taking out boston college 60-59. so these #1 seeds survive. the other two games had george mason beat wichita state 63-55 and florida beating 57-53 over georgetown. so the rest of the elite eight matchups: #1 conneticut vs #11 george mason in washington dc, and #1 villanova vs #3 florida in minneapolis. these matchups are on sunday. tomorrow its #4 lsu vs #2 texas in atlanta and #1 memphis vs #2 ucla in oakland. gonna be fun now.

Thursday, March 23, 2006

lsu upsets duke

yep, #4 lsu beat #1 duke 62-54 in the atlanta regional semis, while #1 memphis beat #13 bradley 80-64 in the oakland bracket. gonzaga vs ucla and west virginia vs texas are both in the 2nd half. an update later.

update 1: okay, west virginia gets a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left to tie the game. then texas heads up court and scores a buzzer beater 3 pointer to win it for texas. final score 74-71 for texas and will meet lsu in the atlanta regional final.

update 2: at one point, ucla was down by 17 points. they came back and won it late in the 2nd half. they beat gonzaga 73-71 and will face memphis in the oakland regional final. should be an exciting day tomorrow with four more games.

Monday, March 20, 2006

"these three players are after hiiiiiiiiiiiiigh stakes, but they'll have to avoid the whammies, as they play the most exciting game of their lives. from television studios in hollywood, it's time to PRESS YOUR LUCK. and heres the star of press your luck - peter tomarken." opening comment said by rod roddy. peter will be missed

deal or no deal

thats what im watching at the moment. hosted by howie mandel. its the show where a contestant picks a briefcase (numbered 1 - 26) which he or she thinks has a million bucks. bit by bit they select a briefcase number which may or may not have the million. the banker makes an "offer" which goes up or down depending on what was the value in the briefcase. you talk about pressure? definitely.

Sunday, February 26, 2006

auto club 500

matt kenseth hung on to win this one with another green-white-checker finish. jimmie johnson finished 2nd. tony stewart and greg biffle both blew an engine. biffle had led the most laps and stewart had a top 5 car. jimmie johnson has the points lead. next race is in 2 weeks in las vegas.
the olympics come to a close

the games are officially done. the flame is out. canada finished the olympics 3rd overall with 24 medals. the ceremonies included the olympic flag handover from the mayor of torino to the mayor of vancouver. vancouver hosts in 2010. next summer games in beijing 2008. thats it with the olympics. now to other things.

okay how bout two silvers.

i just discovered these two. both in short track speed skating. francois louis-tremblay won his silver in the mens 500m event, while the mens relay team won the 5000m event. that makes 24 medals - 7g, 10s, and 7 b. wow. canadas olympic commitee predicted 25. hell, im satisfied.
gold & bronze speed skaters

yep, two medals, this time in the womens 5000m speed skating event. clara hughes won the gold and cindy klassen won the bronze. wow, 5 medals for klassen. i'll bet anybody klassen carries the canadian flag at the closing ceremonies. thats now 22 medals. 7g, 8s, and 7b. wow.

Friday, February 24, 2006

golden gushue

brad gushue curling team won mens gold. they smoked finland 10-4. aided by a 6 point end. this gold brings our total to 20 medals. (6g, 8s, 6b). way to go brad.

bronzed curling rink

shannon kleibrinks curling team beat norways team 11-5 and have taken the bronze medal. we now have 19 medals (5g, 8s, 6b). we have a medal in tomorrows mens curling final. brad gushues rink will have either a gold or silver, depending on the result against finland. so we have 20 after tomorrow. stay tuned.

gold and silver lining

cindy klassen won gold and kristia groves won silver in womens 1500m speed skating. klassen became the first canadian woman to win four medals in the same olympics. the gold goes with the 2 silvers and a bronze she won this year. canada now has 17 medals (5 gold, 7 silvers and 5 bronze).
golden sprint

chandra crawford wins canadas fourth gold of the olympics in the cross country skiing event. she got to the front halfway through and stayed there. beckie scott finished fourth.

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

canada vs czech rep.

boy did canada get away with one. they won 3-2, but the got outplayed badly in the 3rd period. they win thanks to martin brodeur. the czech rep. got 33 shots to canadas 16. canada gets 3 goals on 8 shots (two of them soft ones), then 8 shots the last two periods. so canada goes to the quarter finals tomorrow against russia. the other three matchups: finland vs united states, switzerland vs sweden and czech republic vs slovakia. quarter finals tomorrow.

Monday, February 20, 2006

our canadian womens hockey team has successfully defended its olympic title with a 4-1 win over sweden in the gold medal game. the swedes played well. they definetely earned this one. the u.s. beat finland 4-0 in the bronze medal game. this gold came one day short of exactly four years after canada won their first one. so yay for canada.

Sunday, February 19, 2006

two more medals, daytona 500 and mens hockey

canada picked up two more medals today. cindy klassen picked up a silver in long track speed skating, while pierre leuders & lascelles brown picked up a silver in two men bobsled. canada now has 13 medals (2 gold, 6 silvers and 5 bronze).

jimmie johnson won his first daytona 500 in a crazy race - at least what i read - and a green-white-checkerd finished. (i must have a few words with my vcr. it never did record the race. maybe i should turn the tv on next time). tony stewart got penalized TWICE for aggresive driving and still finshed 5th. next race is next week in california (and i did book that day off).

canada lost to finland 2-0. didnt see the game. they picked a bad time to start sucking. time to get cracking or they wont get a medal.

Saturday, February 18, 2006

a shocker in hockey

two days after beating the czech republic, switzerland beat canada 2-0. they just absolutely shut down the canadians. jim hughson and greg millen both said this will be good for the game of hockey. no doubt in my mind. im still pretty stunned with the result.

Friday, February 17, 2006

how bout a bronze

thirty years ago tonight was the anniversary of central red army visiting philadelphia. january 11, 1976 the flyers beat central red army. i don't remember the score (i did see the highlights), but there was one play that stands out. ed van impe's elbow on one of the russian players, which caused the red army team to leave the ice. from which you can hear bob cole say "they're going home." it was found out the team wasn't paid, so they had to finished the game. i remember seeing the tape which had comments from players who was involved. so thats that.

update: toronto 3 edmonton 2. michael tellqvist absolutely stood on his head tonight. edmonton outshot toronto 39-19. tellqvist is likely getting first star in the game.

update 2: vancouver 4 calgary 3 in overtime. vancouver scored all their goals on the powerplay. the tying goal was with the vancouver goalie on the bench for an extra player AND two calgary players in the penalty box. so another saturday night done.
