The Bahamas 🇧🇸 at the Olympics

Image
Today is the Bahamas 🇧🇸 turn. They became the Bahamas Olympic Committee in 1952 and was in their first summer Olympics that year. Have been in every summer Olympics since then, with the exception of 1980 (remember the boycott?). They have never been a winter games yet. They have won 8g, 2s and 6b for 16 total overall. All medals were won in sailing and athletics. First medal won was a bronze in sailing star class in 1956 by Durwand Knowles and Sloane Farrington. First gold was also in sailing star class in 1964 by Durwand Knowles and Cecil Cooke. First bronze was the womens 4x100m team in track. Debbie Ferguson, Eldece Clark-Lewis, Chandra Sturrup, Savatheda Fynes and Pauline Davis-Thompson. Highest amount of medals in one games was 3 in 2000. First flag bearer was Harold Munnings in 1960, although I think there was one or two before. Debbie Ferguson carried the most times at 2 (2004 and 2008). Here is the flag of the Bahamas.

Saint Lucia

Time for something different. A nation at the Olympics we don't pay attention to. Today is Saint Lucia. They are located in the eastern Caribbean. They are in the Atlantic time zone. Their capital is Castries. Official language is English, vernacle language is St. Lucian Creole. Island is in between Martinique and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Closest major country is Venezuela. February 22 1979 became independent state.  National Olympic Committee formed in 1987 and IOC recognized it in 1993. First games was 1996 in Atlanta and been in every games since. Michelle Baptist first flag bearer. Laverne Spencer was flag bearer 4 times. Fun fact - when Athens hosted in 2004, Saint Lucia was first country in parade of nations (Greece opened with Pyrros Dimas carrying the flag, and all the Greek athletes closed it).  So there you go.  Find out soon who will be next. Here is the flag of Saint Lucia.

Canada world juniors champions

Dylan Guenther is the overtime hero as Canada beats the Czech Republic 3-2 to capture their 20th world juniors championship. They had control for most of the game up 2-0. A lapse fir about a minute let the Czechs tie it. 6:22 into overtime Guenther wins it. Congrats to Canada and to the Czech Republic for a great game. Next tournament is 2024 in Gothenburg Sweden.

Bronze medal game

Boy the things I miss at work. The craziest world juniors game ever had the United States beat Sweden 8-7 in overtime. 9 goals in the second period alone (Sweden 5 USA 4. I looked it up). That had to have been a crazy game to watch. The fans got a treat.

Semi final two

Wow. Canada wins 6-2, even though the USA outplayed Canada in their own end. Outside their own end Canada was pretty good. Thomas Milic stood on his head and was excellent. USA had two goals called back for goalie interference (Craig Button thought otherwise). I'm sure that was yhe difference. Anyways Canada vs Czech Republic for gold and USA vs Sweden for gold.

Semi final one

This one went into overtime. After tying it with 39 seconds left in the 3rd, the Czech Republic will be playing for gold, winning 2-1 over Sweden.  Sweden will be playing for bronze. Earlier Latvia beat Austria 4-2 (they beat Austria 5-2 on Monday) and swept the relegation series to stay in the top group for next year.  Austria gets relegated to division 1. Canada vs United States in an hour.

Canada wins quarterfinal thriller

Wow crazy game. Canada barely beats Slovakia 4-3 in overtime to play in the semis to play the United States, who bombed Germany 11-1. Other quarterfinals had Sweden beat Finland 3-2 and Czech Republic beat Switzerland 9-1. Sweden will play the Czechs in hhe other semi final.  Both semis are Wednesday. Connor Bedard had 2g 1a. Bedard: 1. with his first goal passed Jordan Eberle for most goals by a Canadian in a world juniors career with 15. (He has 16 now). 2. The goal also put him at 32 points, passing Eric Lindros for most career world juniors points by a Canadian with 32 (Lindros had 31. Bedard now had 34). 3. He now has 21 points in this tournament,  passing Dale McCourt (1977) and Brayden Schenn (2011) for most points by s Canadian in one tournament. 4. The assist passes Jason Allison fir most assists by a Canadian in one tournament,  now with 13. Allison had 12 in 1995.  Bedard is amazing.

Happy new year

Happy 2023. It's finally arrived. Felt like a slow week. I hope you all have a wonderful 2023. May it be a good cheer of a year.  Cheers 🥂.
