Sebastian Coe became the first man to win consecutive 1500m golds. women's marathon made its debut here in which Joan Benoit won. it became notable when Gabi Andersen-Schiess of Switzerland had stumbled through the last lap of the race. she had been suffering from heat exhaustion. Carl Lewis equalled Jesse Owens 1936 performance by winning golds in 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m and long jump. Zola Budd, a South African who was given British citizenship to avoid the apartheid based ban, collided with American Mary Decker-Slaney in the final of the 3000m event, causing Decker-Slaney to fall. Budd got booed for the remainder of the race. Budd was cleared of any wrongdoing, while Decker-Slaney declared it not culpable. Maricica Puica of Romania won the 3000m. the first medal won at these games was also China's first medal. Xu Haifeng won gold in 50m pistol. Li Ning won six medals in gymnastics. (3g, 2s, 1b) he was nicknamed the prince of gymnastics in China. he later lit the cauldron at the 2008 games in Beijing. archer Neroli Fairhall of New Zealand was the first paraplegic to compete at an Olympics. she finished 35th in the individual event.
