 These games were held in Sydney Australia from September 15 to October 1. 199 nations and 10647 athletes participated. First games to have 300 events. Last games under Juan Antonio Samaranch. Triathlon began. Brigitte McMahon of Switzerland won on women's side, Simon Whitfield won on men's side. Ian Thorpe of Australia debuts. Cathy Freeman of Australia lights cauldron, then wins 400m on home soil. Cameroon wins historic soccer gold. Democratic Republic of Congo reappears for first time since 1980. From 1984 to 1996 they competed as Zaire. United States won most gold (37) and most overall (93). Australia won 16g, 25s, 17b for 58 total. Canada won 3g, 3s, 8b for 14 total. Tomorrow - the games return to Greece. Here is the emblem for today.
