1972 (XX Olympiad) games

 These games were held in Munich, West Germany from August 26 to September 11. 121 nations and 7134 athletes participated. Overshadowing the games was the Munich massacre. First official mascot appears. A daschund named Waldo. Mark Spitz wins 7 swimming golds. Soviet Union beats United States in basketball final in controversial finish. Handball (1936) and archery (1920) return, while slalom canoeing debuts. Olympic oath for officials begins here. Soviet Union won most gold (50) and most overall (99). West Germany won 13g, 11s, 16b for 40 total. Canada won 2s, 3b for 5 total. Tomorrow - 1976 in Montreal. Here is the emblem for today.
