1960 (XVII Olympiad) games

 These games were held in Rome Italy from August 25 to September 11. 83 nations and 5347 athletes participated. First Paralympic Games were also held in Rome. Gert Fredrickson of Sweden wins 6th sprint canoe gold. Aladar Greenwich of Hungary wins 6th consecutive gold in team sabre. Wilma Rudolph, a former polio patient, wins 3 gold in track. Abe Bikila is first African and first Ethiopian to win marathon. He wins it running barefoot. Pakistan wins field hockey gold, dethroning India's 6 straight golds. Japanese men's gymnastics team wins first of 5 straight golds. 6 days after emergency appendectomy, Jeff Farrell wins 2 swimming golds. Soviet Union wins most gold (43) and most overall (103). Host Italy wins 13g, 10s, 13b for 36 total. Canada wins one medal - a silver in men's is with coxswain. Tomorrow - the 1964 games in Tokyo Japan. Here is the emblem for today.
