2002 winter Olympics

 The 19th edition of the winter Olympics was held from February 8-24. 78 nations and 2397 athletes participated in these games.

1. Ole Einar Bjorndalin wins gold in 10k, 12.5k, 20k and 4X7.5k.

2. Samppa Lajunen of Finland wins three gold in Nordic combined. 

3. Simon Ammann of Switzerland wins two ski jumping golds.

4. Janica Kostelic wins 3 golds 1 silver in downhill skiing. It is Croatia's first winter medals.

5. Steven Bradbury wins Australia's first winter gold in 1000m short track, benefitting from competitors crashing in front of him. Few days later, Alisa Camplin wins Australia's second gold. This one in women's aerials.

6. Vladimir Kopat scores a goal from center ice. It's the game winner as Belarus scores the biggest upset in men's hockey as they beat Sweden 4-3. Belarus finishes 4th, losing to Russia for bronze.

7. Canada scores a double gold in ice hockey. First on February 21, the women beat the USA 3-2 with Jayna Hefford scoring the game winner. Three days later, the men also beat the USA 5-2 to win their first gold in 50 years. Joe Sakic scored two here.

8. Two podium sweeps.

A. February 11, men's snowboard halfpipe, USA, Ross Powers, Danny Kass, Jarret Thomas.

B. February 13, women's luge, Germany, Sylke Otto, Barbara Niedernhuber, Silke Kraushaar.

9. Norway finishes with most golds at 13, tying a record from 1976 by the Soviet Union. They finish with 25 total (13g, 5s, 7b). Germany breaks overall record, winning 36 (12g, 16s, 8b). USA ties a home Olympics record with 10g (1994 Norway had 10 as well). They finish with 34 total (10g, 13s, 11b). Canada finished with 7g, 3s, 7b for 17 total.
