1964 winter Olympics

 The 9th edition of the winter Olympics was held in Innsbruck Austria. They were held from January 29-February 9. 36 nations and 1091 athletes participated. Highlights include:

1. Venues were within 20km of each other.

2. Luge makes its debut, as does North Korea, India and Mongolia.

3. Lidiya Skoblikova of Soviet Union wins four golds in speed skating. She is the first athlete to win four in one games.

4. Sixten Jernberg of Sweden adds three cross country medals to increase his career haul to nine.

5. Soviet Union wins first of four straight hockey golds. Goals differential breaks tie between 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  Sweden gets silver, Czechoslovakia bronze and Canada fourth. 

6. Five podium sweeps 

A. January 31, women's 500m speed skating, Soviet Union. Lidiya Skoblikova, Irina Yegorova and Tatyana Sidarova.

B. February 1, women's 10k, Soviet Union, Klavodiya Boyarskikh, Yevdokiya Mekishlo and Mariya Gosakova.

C. February 4, men's luge, Germany, Thomas Kohler, Klaus-Michael Bonsack, Hans Plenk

D. February 5, men's 5000m, Norway, Knut Johannsen, Per Ivar Moe, Fred Anton Maier

E. February 6, women's downhill, Austria, Christl Haas, Edith Zimmerman, Travol  Hecher.

7.  Soviet Union finishes atop the medal standings with 25 medals (11g 8s 6b). They broke two records: most golds and most total medals. Host Austria finished with 4g 5s 3b for 12 total. Canada finished with three (1g 1s 1b)
