1980 winter Olympics

The 13th edition of the winter Olympics was held in Lake Placid NY. They were held from February 13-24. 37 nations and 1072 athletes participated.

1. Some venues from 1932 were renovated and used for these games.

2. Last games in which a city with 15000 people or less was held.

3. Eric Heiden won all five speed skating golds - a record I believe hasn't been matched.

4. China (winter), Cyprus (first ever) and Costa Rica debuted here.

5. USA beats USSR in the "Miracle On Ice" hockey game. Two days later they beat Finland to win gold.

6. Hanni Wenzel of Liechtenstein won her country's first two golds in Alpine skiing.

7. USSR finished atop the gold medal standings with 10. They also had 6s and 6b to make the total 22.  East Germany finished first overall with 23 medals (9g, 7s, 7b). USA finished with 6g, 4s, 2 b for 12 total. Canada won only two medals - a silver from Gaetan Boucher in the 1000m speed skating (behind Eric Heiden) and a bronze from Steve Podborski in the downhill.

Tomorrow - the 1984 winter games in Sarajevo.
