1976 winter Olympics

 The 12th winter Olympics was held from February 4-15. 37 nations and 1123 athletes participated.

1. Games were originally awarded to Denver Colorado. November 7, 1972 Colorado voters rejected funding for the games. Denver pulled out on November 15. Whistler BC was offered the games, but was turned down due to provincial election. Salt Lake offered but was rejected. Innsbruck was asked and officially accepted on February 5 1973.

2. Franz Klammer of Austria wins downhill in 1:45.73

3. Rosi Mittermaier of West Germany wins 2g 1sin Alpine skiing. Missed a third gold by .13s.

4. Soviet Union wins fourth hockey gold in a row.

5. Second cauldron was built for these games. This and the 1964 cauldron was lit.

6. Bobsleigh and luge were contested on same track.

7. Soviet Union finishes atop the medal standings with 13g, 6s, 8b for 27 total, breaking their own record for most golds and most total. Austria finished with 2g, 2s 2b for 6 total. Canada finished with 1g, 1s 1b for 3 total.  Tomorrow 1980 Lake Placid.
