1960 winter Olympics

Squaw Valley CA was host of the 1960 (8th) winter Olympics. It was held from February 18-28. 30 nations and 665 athletes participated in these games.

1. Squaw Valley was an undeveloped resort when chosen to host. All the venues and infrastructure were built brand new.

2. Bobsled was not run for the first and only time.  Lack of participants and cost made it impractical to build a track.

3. South Africa debuted here. They don't return until 1994 due to apartheid issues.v

4. Speed skating, figure skating and hockey were held indoors and on artificial ice for the first time.

5. Speaking of hockey, USA wins gold here.

6. New timing equipment was installed and a quartz clock was used for hundredths of a second. Longines supplied the equipment. IBM supplies the computer to tabulate the results.

7. One podium sweep here. Soviet Union swept the women's 10k cross country skiing event. Maria Gusakova, Lyubov Kozyreva and Radia Yeroshina finished on the podium.

8. Soviet Union finished atop the medal standings with 7g, 5s, 9b for 21 total. Host USA finished with 3g, 4s, 3b for 10 total. Canada finished with 2g, 1s, 1b for 4 total.
