1948-49 NHL season

This season had (no kidding captain obvious) 60 games and 6 teams. Highlights include: the "Durnan Rule" came into effect. This rule disallowed goalies to become captains. Opponents had argued that Durnan had come out to argue calls just to give Montreal a free time out.  During the season Durnan had recorded four straight shutouts and hadn't allowed a goal in 309 minutes 21 seconds. November 10 unseasonably warm temperatures had created a fog bank at the Boston Garden.  Fog got so bad that Bill Chadwick had to abandon a game between Boston and Detroit nine minutes in.  The game was replayed the next night, which Boston won 4-1. February 3 had Turk Broda being the first Leaf to win 250 games. Playoffs: semi finals had Detroit beat Montreal 4-3 and Toronto beat Boston 4-1.  Toronto then beat Detroit 4-0 to win the Stanley Cup. Toronto became: 1. The second team to win the cup with a below .500 record (Chicago in 1938). And 2. the first team to win three straight Stanley Cups.  They won't be the last.
