1978 Commonwealth Games

 The 11th edition of the Commonwealth Games was in Edmonton Alberta from August 3 to 12.  47 nations and 1475 athletes competed in 128 events and 11 sports.  Queen Elizabeth II opened the games, first time since becoming Queen. Diane Jones Konihowski was final baton runner.  Main venue was Commonwealth stadium. First games to use computerized system to handle ticket sales, first games under Commonwealth Games name, and first to have a mascot.  Keyano the grizzly bear was mascot. Bangladesh 🇧🇩, Cayman Islands, Cyprus 🇨🇾, Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla (now Saint Kitts and Nevis) and Turks & Caicos debuted here. Some venues: 1. Commonwealth Stadium (new), 2. Commonwealth Bowls (lawn bowling,  new) 3. Argyll Velodrome (track cycling, new) 4. Kinsmen Aquatics center (new) 5. Strathcona Shooting Range (new).  6. Edmonton Gardens (boxing). Now sitscyhd Edmonton Expo Center. 7. Northlands Coliseum (Gymnastics) old home if the Oilers.  21 nations medaled.  Canada 1st in gold and overall 45g 31s 33b 109 total. England was second in both 27g 27s 33b 87 total. Australia was 3rd in both with 24g 33s 27b 84 total. New Zealand was tied for 5th in gold and 4th overall 5g 6s 9b 20 total. Kenya was 4th in gold and 5th overall 7g 6s 5b 18 total.  Tomorrow - 1982 games in Brisbane Australia. Here is the 1978 games logo.
