1950 Commonwealth Games

The 4th edition was in Auckland, New Zealand from February 4-11, 1950. 12 nations and 590 athletes participated in 87 events. Bernard Freyerg opened the games. The 4th game were originally scheduled for Montreal in 1942 but WWII canceled them and 1946. Malaysia and Nigeria debuted here.  Eden Park was main venue.  Auckland town hall (boxing and wrestling), Western Springs (cycling and closing ceremony), Lake Karapiro (rowing) and New Market Olympic pool (swimming) were other venues.  Total attendance was 246,694. That would end up more than 1954, 1958 and 1962.  Australia had most golds and overall (34g, 27s, 19b for 80t). New Zealand was 3rd in golds and 2nd overall (10g, 22s, 21b, 53t). England was 2nd in golds and 3rd overall (19g 16s, 13b 48t). Canada was 4th overall (8g, 9s 13b 30t). South Africa rounded out the top 5 with 8g 4s 8b 20t. All 12 nations won at least one medal. Tomorrow is 1954 in Vancouver.  Here is the logo (I think) for these games.
