Beijing was host of these games. they were held from August 8-24. 204 nations were at the games. 125 Olympic records fell, including 37 world records. in swimming alone 65 Olympic and 25 world records fell. only two swimming Olympic records still stand. BMX racing was held for the first time. women's 3000m steeplechase was held for the first time. open water 10km swimming was held for the first time. Michael Phelps won all 8 golds in swimming, including the relay races. Usain Bolt won the 100m in a WR time of 9.69s. he also won the 200m and 4X100m relay. Afghanistan, Mauritius, Sudan, Tajikistan and Togo won their first Olympic medals. Mongolia and Panama won their first golds at these games. Mongolia had the record for most medals won without winning a gold before these games. Serbia won its first medal under this name, previously participating as Serbia & Montenegro and Yugoslavia. Nastia Liukin won the all around gold in gymnastics becoming the third American - behind Mary Lou Retton in 1984 and Carly Patterson in 2004.
