2018 winter Olympics

 The 23rd winter Olympics was held in Pyeongchang from February 9-25. 93 nations and 2922 athletes participated.

1. Big air snowboard, mass start speed skating, mixed doubles curling, and team alpine skiing were added as new sports.

2. Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore made winter debuts here.

3. Sven Kramer (Netherlands) wins gold in 5000m, becoming only male speed skater to win the same event three times.

4. Ireen Wust (Netherlands) wins individual gold for 4th consecutive Olympics, marking the first time that had ever happened. She is also first speed skater to win 10 medals.

5. Jorien Ter Mors (Netherlands) becomes first female to win a medal in two different sports in the same games. (1000m long track and 3000m relay short track)

6. Ester Ledecka (Czech Republic) becomes first female to win gold in two different sports in the same games (super-G skiing and snowboard parallel giant slalom.

7. Noriaki Kasai (Japan) became first athlete to participate in 8 Olympics, taking part in ski jumping qualifying.

8. Yuzuru Hanyu (Japan) becomes 4th male figure skating win back to back gold (Gilles Grafstrom, Karl Schafer and Dick Button).

9. Germany and Canada tied for gold in two man bobsled, making the only second time it has happened. First time was 1998, involving Canada and Italy.

10. Three podium sweeps.

A. February 10, women's 3000m, Netherlands, Carlijn Achtereekte, Ireen Wust, Antoinette de Jong.

B. February 11, men's 30k skiathlon, Norway, Simen Hegsted Kruger, Martin Johnsrud Sonoby, Hans Christer Holund.

C. February 20, Nordic combined, Germany, Johannes Ryozek, Fabian Riessle, Eric Frenzel 

11. Norway breaks overall medals total, winning 39 (USA had 37). Norway and Germany tied for most golds with 14. They tied Canada for most golds from 2010 (also 14). Canada finished 2018 with 11g, 8s, 10b for 29 total. South Korea finished with 5g, 8s, 4b for 17 overall.
