the philadelphia phillies won the n.l. east by beating washington 6-1 while the mets lost to the florida marlins badly, at the same time eliminating the mets from the wild card. meanwhile for the wild card, the san diego padres blew a chance to win it by losing to the milwaukee brewers. at the same time the colorado rockies beat the arizona diamondbacks to tie the padres for the wild card. meaning: 1) the phillies will play wither colorado or san diego in the first round. 2) the rockied and padres play a one game playoff tomorrow for the wild card. 3) the diamondbacks are n.l. west champions and will play the cubs in the first round. in the a.l. it will be the red sox vs the angels and the yankees vs the indians. playoffs start wednesday, not tuesday
