1953-54 NHL season

 The 1953-54 NHL season had 70 games and 6 teams.  December 9, Montreal and Toronto setca penalties record. Bernie Geoffrion of Montreal is barred to play against New York Rangers for remainder of season after a stick swinging incident that resulted in Ron Murphy with a broken jaw and concussion. Maurice Richard calls president Clarence Campbell a dictator. Richard is fined for that statement.  December 12 Richard collects 611th point, passing Elmer Lach on all time points list. James Norris trophy is awarded for first time. Red Kelly of Detroit wins it.  Harry Lumley has 13 shutouts, Terry Sawchuk has 12. Jean Beliveau makes his debut this season. Semi finals: Detroit 4 Toronto 1, Montreal 4 Boston 0. Stanley Cup: Detroit 4 Montreal 3. Montreal's Doug Harvey scores an own goal in overtime in game 7 to give Detroit the win. It's Detroit's 7th Stanley Cup.
