1940-41 NHL season

The 1940-41 season had 7 teams and 48 game schedule. Montreal had been struggling financially, so Frank Patrick became investor and governer.  He hired Tommy Gordon as GM and Dick Irvin Sr as coach. Gordon and Irvin scouted and hired players such as Elmer Lach, Johnny Quilty, Joe Benoit, defense man ken Reardon, Toe Blake and goalie Bert Gardiner. Quilty ended up rookie of the year.  Boston went 23 games without losing, finishing first easily. New York Americans conversely finished last with eight wins.  QF: Detroit beat the Rangers 2-1, and Chicago beat Montreal 2-1. SF: Detroit beat Chicago 2-0 and Boston beat Toronto 4-3. Stanley Cup: Boston Beat Detroit 4-0.

Some Olympic news

Mandy Bujold will be going to Tokyo after all. She was initially ineligible because she had been pregnant and postmartum with her daughter and had to miss qualification. She initially petitioned the IOC for a spot but was turned down. She then took it to court of arbitration for sport and won. Moms with newborns like her and Kim Gaucher get to go.  They should have been allowed to going the first place. It's stupid that women still have to fight for this. Happy moms can bring their newborns and their partners with them.

1939-40 NHL season

The 1939-40 season had 7 teams and 48 game schedule. Tragedy struck Montreal as player coach Babe Siebert and his daughter drowned in August. Without him on defense, the Canadiens finish last.  New York Americans, struggling financially, first trades Sweeney Shriner to Toronto for Busher Jackson, Buzz Boll, Murray Armstrong and Jimmy Fowler. Americans then trade Eddie Wiseman and $5000 to Boston for Eddie Shore.  On February 25th, the first NHL game was televised featuring New York Rangers and Montreal. Canada Champions

Nick Paul scored the overtime goal giving Canada a 3-2 win over Finland and their 27th title. Great game today.  What a story this ended up. Bronze medal game

It ended up not much of a doubt as the US beat Germany 6-1 to take the bronze.  Germany's highest finished since 2010 (I think, not sure). Coming up, the gold medal game.

An Olympic first

For the first time since baseball became an official Olympic sport in 1992, Cuba will NOT send a team to the summer game.  With a 6-5 loss to Canada, they sit 0-2 and will not advance to the final qualifying round.  Crazy.  Canada and Venezuela, both 2-0, will be advancing. They play each other tomorrow. They will also face the too two from group a.

On this day

On this day in 1923, the New York Giants became the first team in the 20th century to score at least one run in every inning, as they beat the Phillies 22-8 at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.  Yikes.  Giants had 23 hits.  Phillies had seven errors in the game as well.

Canada vs Finland, quarterfinals set

Earlier this morning, Finland beat Canada in a shoot out 3-2. Canada had to wait for the result between Germany and Latvia to see whether they get into the quarterfinals or not.  Germany just beat Latvia 2-1 in regulation meaning Canada barely gets in (Kazakhstan has 10 pts also but Canada beat them. Latvia has 9). The quarterfinals are on Thursday and has: Canada vs Russia, Switzerland vs Germany, Czech Republic vs Finland and Slovakia vs USA.  Now the run for gold is on.
