 These games were held in Los Angeles CA from July 28 to August 14. 140 nations and 6800 athletes participated. 14 Eastern bloc nations boycotted for the 1980 U.S led boycott. First games that had athletes living in one Olympic village. Opening ceremony featured Bill Suitor arriving via Jet Pack. People's Republic of China returns to games after agreement with IOC to rename Republic of China to Chinese Taipei (Taiwan). Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco first female Olympic champion of muslim nation to win gold for Morocco in 400m hurdles. Synchro swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and wind surfing debuted here. Mary Lou Retton first gymnast outside Eastern Europe to win all around. United States won most gold (83) and most overall (174). Canada won 10g, 18s, 16b for 44 total.
