1956 (XVI Olympiad) games
These games were held in Melbourne Australia from November 22 to December 8. 72 nations and 3314 athletes participated. First games in southern hemisphere. First games held outside summer months. Equestrian events held in Stockholm due to strict Australian quarantine laws. 9 nations boycotted for various reasons. In water polo, Hungary vs Soviet Union had "match of blood" where violent moments happened. Audience had to be restrained to avoid further unrest. Game was ca6and Hungary awarded win, with them being ahead at time of cancellation. John Ian Wing wrote a letter to IOC and suggested the athletes matched in as one at closing ceremony. It's a tradition that continues today. Soviet Union had most gold (37) and most overall (98). Host Australia had 13g, 8s, 14b for 35 total. Co-host Sweden had 8g, 5s, 6b for 19 total.
