At 8:32am on this day in 1980, Mt St Helens erupted. 57 people died in the eruption that buried stuff, cataclysmic lahars, forests blown away, Toutle river flowed with ash and trees, Spirit Lake boiled, and flora and fauna took years to recover. After 14 years out, not only did Buffalo make the playoffs, they're into the second round after beating the Boston Bruins 4-1 in game 6 and the series 4-2. They will get either Tampa Bay or Montreal. That has a 7th game.
Tournament was held from February 9-23 and 12 teams participated. Tournament was at the Meribel ice palace in Meribel, 45 minutes from Albertville. 46 games were played. First tournament to have a knockout round. Unified team wins gold (consisted of old Soviet Union republics).
