1936 winter Olympics
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was host these games. They were held from February 6-16. 28 nations and 646 athletes participated in these games. Highlights include:
1. Alpine skiing makes its debut as the combined. Germany won gold in the men's (Franz Pinur) and women's (Christi Cranz).
2. Ivar Ballangrud wins three of four speed skating races.
3. Switzerland wins 4 man bobsled in time of 5:19.85.
4. Great Britain knocks off Canada for their only Olympic ice hockey gold.
5. Heaviest and largest medals to date (3.9 inches diameter, 0.16 inches thick and 324g or 11.4oz).
6. Two podium sweeps. First on February 13 in Nordic combined. Oddbjorn Hagen, Olaf Hoppsbakken and Sverre Brodahl of Norway landed on the podium.
The second sweep was on February 15 in men's 50k. Elis Wiklund, Axel Wikstrum and Nils-Joel Englund of Sweden finished on the podium.
7. Norway finished atop the medal standings with 7g, 5s and 3b for 15 total. Canada finished these games with one silver. Yup in ice hockey.
