1968 winter Olympics
The 10th edition of the winter Olympics was held in Grenoble France from February 6-18. 37 nations and 1158 athletes participated in the games.
1. Jean Claude Lilly won three golds in Alpine skiing.
2. One of Killy's golds had some controversy. Karl Schranz of Austria claimed a mysterious man (possibly) in black crossed his path, forcing him to stop. He was allowed a rerun, which was faster than Killy. A jury of appeal decided to disqualify Schranz, giving gold to Killy.
3. Peggy Fleming of the USA, wins their only medal of the games - a gold in figure skating.
4. These games were credited with being more popular in the USA, due to ABC coverage, mostly on Fleming and Killy. Fleming became a darling overnight and Killy was popular with the younger ladies.
5. IOC ordered drug and gender tests.
6. East and West Germany competed separately for the first time.
7. East Germany women's luge team disqualified after they were found heating the runners on their sled.
8. All bobsled races held before sunrise. Track was designed and built with insufficient cooling capabilities and couldn't keep in the sub.
9. First Olympics to use "Buglers Dream" by Leo Arnaud. ABC used it as their theme for television coverage.
10. Canada wins a bronze in hockey. It would be their last medal I hockey until 1992. Nancy Greene won a gold and silver medal at these games. These medals would be the only medals won at these games (1g, 1s, 1b, for 3 total).
