1984 winter Olympics
The 14th edition of the winter Olympics was held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina) and were held from February 8-19. 49 nations and 1272 athletes participated.
1. First winter Olympics held in a Slavic speaking country.
2. Weather wreaked havoc here. Wind delayed the Alpine skiing for four days.
3. Egypt, British Virgin Islands, Monaco, Puerto Rico and Senegal made their winter Olympics debut.
4. Marja-Liisa Hamalainen of Finland won all three individual cross country skiing event and added a silver in the 4x5k.
5. Jure Franco of Yugoslavia won its only medal of the games AND Yugoslavia first winter medal - a silver in the giant slalom
6. Women's 20k added to the Olympics.
7. Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean earned across the board perfect scores in the free dance part of ice dance. It has never happened since.
8. Erik Kvalfass and Peter Angerer each won the complete set of medals
9. Twin brothers Phil and Steve Mahre finished first and second in slalom.
10. Lamine Gueye of Senegal was the first black African to compete in winter games.
11. Two podium sweeps
A. Feb 12, women's luge, East Germany, Steffi Walter-Martin, Bettina Schmidt and Use Oberhoffmer-Weiss
B. Feb 15, women's 3000m speed skating, East Germany, Andrea Schone, Karin Enke and Gabi Schonbrunn.
12. East Germany won the most gold with 9. They finished with 24 total (9g 9s 6b). Soviet Union finished with most overall medals with 25. (6g 10s, 9b) Yugoslavia finished with the one silver. Canada finished with 2g 1s, 1b for 4 total.
