1948 winter Olympics
These games were in St Moritz Switzerland from January 30 to February 8. 28 nations and 669 athletes competed in 22 events among 4 sports. 1. These games were "the games of renewal" after the second world war ended.
2. Barbara Ann Scott won Canada's first figure skating gold. Suzanne Morrow and Wallace Diestelmeyer won bronze in pairs for Canada. American Dick Button, at 19, wins gold on the men's side.
3. Canada wins gold in hockey (again).
4. More Alpine skiing events added.
5. Skeleton returns after 20 years.
6. Two demonstration sports. First was winter pentathlon (just think summer equivalent). Second is military patrol. It gets renamed biathlon and added to the 1960 games.
7. Two podium sweeps. First by Sweden on January 31st in men's 16k. Martin Lindstrom, Nils Ostensson and Gunnar Erikson.
Second sweep was in ski jumping from Norway on February 7. Petter Hugsted, Birger Ruud and Thorlief Schjelderud won medals.
8. Norway (4g, 3s, 3b) Sweden (4g, 3s, 3b) and Switzerland (3g, 4s,3b) all finished atop the medal standings with 10 medals. Canada had 2g and 1b for 3 overall. Tomorrow - 1952 Oslo
