1928 winter Olympics

The second edition of the winter Olympics was held from February 11-19.  25 nations and 469 athletes participated. Highlights include: 1. Fluctuating weather conditions wreaked havoc.  Blizzard hit during opening ceremonies. Warmer weather happened during the remainder. Warmer weather forced the sudden end of the 10000 m speedskating race as Irving Jaffee had taken the lead from a Norwegian. A Norwegian ref suddenly cancelled the event. Then the IOC overturned the decision. Then the international skating union overturned the IOC decision. Nobody got medals. 2. Switzerland won only a bronze, becoming the host nation with the lowest medal total. 3. Sonja Henie won her first of three golds, and becoming youngest Olympic champion. 4. Canada finished with one medal - a gold in hockey.  Tomorrow - 1932.

1924 winter Olympics

The historical countdown to Beijing starts in 1924 in Chamonix France.  They were held from January 25-Febrary 5. 16 nations and 258 athletes were at these games. Highlights include: 1. They were originally called International Winter Sports Week.  In 1925 the IOC decided to rename it the first winter Olympics and had them independent from the summer games.  2. The tradition of having them the same year as the summer games also began here.  3. The first winter Olympics gold went to Charles Jewlain in the 500m speed skating event.  4. Sonja Henie of Norway participated in her first Olympics at 11 years old. Although she finishes last here, she would win gold in three straight Olympics. 5. Gilles Grafstrom of Sweden defends his 1920 summer Olympics gold in figure skating. 6. Canada, represented by the Toronto Granites, also defend their 1920 summer Olympics gold. 7. There were two podium sweeps here, both by Norway, and both by Thorlief Haub, Thoralif Stromstad and Johan Grottumsbraten.

NFL postseason matchups set (finally)

Quite the Sunday nighter between Las Vegas and the Chargers.  The Raiders got themselves and Pittsburgh into the postseason (saw some fans wanting the Chargers and Raiders to tie to eliminate Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh lost to both teams). Saturday has Las Vegas at Cincinnati and New England at Buffalo. Sunday has Philadelphia at Tampa Bay, San Francisco at Dallas and Pittsburgh at Kansas City. Monday night has Arizona at Los Angeles Rams.  That will be the first Monday night playoff game since December 26, 1988 when Minnesota beat the Rams 28-17.  That was to avoid playing Christmas Day. What a day.
