1988-89 NHL season

 The 1988-89 NHL season had 21 teams and an 80 game schedule. Highlights include: 1. Wayne Gretzky traded to Los Angeles with Marty McSorley, Mike Krushelnyski, for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, 18 million dollars, 1989 first round draft pick, 1991 first round draft pick and 1993 first round draft pick. 2. September 6, Doug Gilmour to Calgary. 3. Tom Barrasso to Pittsburgh. 4. Pittsburgh makes playoffs after 7 years. 5. January 25 Mario Lemieux records points on 14 straight goals. 6. Brian Leetch gets 23rd goal as a rookie. 7. December 31, Mario Lemieux scores a PPG, SHG, ESG, PS and ENG. 8. May 19, Larry Robinson plays in 200th playoff game. 9. June 6 Wayne Gretzky wins 9th Hart trophy.
