1908 summer games (IV Olympiad)

The games of the IV Olympiad was held in London from April 27 to October 31 1908. 22 nations and 2008 athletes participated. The financial restraints of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius near Naples in 1906 caused the games to be relocated to London.  The marathon was ran at 26 miles.  It became standard in 1924. Figure skating was added.  Oscar Swahn of Sweden won gold in running deer shooting, becoming the oldest Olympics champion. John Taylor first African American to win gold, this in the medley relay.  Host Great Britain won most gold and most overall (56g, 146 total). Canada won 3g, 3s, 10b for 16 total. Tomorrow - the 1912 games. Here is the poster for today's entry.
