look back at.... 1924 winter olympics
the countdown to PyeongChang is on. today is the 1924 winter olympics. the first winter olympics were held in Chamonix France from January 25 to February 5. it was originally called "international week of winter sport." 16 nations participated in these games. highlights include: the first gold won by Charles Jewtraw of the United States in speedskating, winning the 500m event, Canada winning gold in hockey. they were the second to "defend" their 1920 summer games gold (who knew eh). Gillis Grafstrom of Sweden was the first winning gold in figure skating. Sonja Henie was in her first Olympics at 11 years old. although she finished last, she was popular with the fans and wins gold in the next three games she is in. Canada finished with one medal - the gold in hockey. here is the poster for the games.
