Geez end of February already

End of February is here. And a leap day as well. Let's see what happened. Spring training baseball begun, the Brier began last night with Mike McKewan beating Glenn Howard in the wild card game, Kerri Einarson winning the Scotties tournament, Kansas City Chiefs winning the super bowl, NASCAR began and loads of NHL hockey. Canada picked up a few Olympic spots as well. Not bad for such a short month.

Random thoughts

Although it's been a cool -9c day today, it was spring like the last two days an is supposed to warm up again to above 0. Melt some more snow. This time last year it was freaking cold all of February and into the first part of March. I will take the nicer weather any time. It helps that spring training baseball has begun. Aaaaahhhh baseball. Season starts March 26th. Rewatched inning 1 of Ken Burns baseball documentary on the history of the game. Plus the Brier starts Friday. I wonder how insane that will get given what happened at the Scotties. Maybe we can ask Devin Heroux. More later.

Two Olympic spots claimed over the weekend.

Yup two more nabbed. Both the mens and womens fencing teams each nabbed one in the foil event. Can July get here soon enough? I wish.

Scotties final

Kerri Einarson gas won her first Scotties final and Manitoba's 11th as the beat Rachel Homan 8-7 in an extra end. Wow. Einarson and her team will be representing Canada at the worlds next month and at next years Scotties.

Scotties history

New Brunswick scored 7 (yes 7) in the 7th end to beat Manitoba 13-7. The 7 is the highest scoring end with the hammer (last shot). This after there were 68 points scored in the evening draw over the weekend (4 games). Thanks to Devin Heroux for the info.

Scotties making history

The Nova Scotia women's curling team will be making history when Emma Jones becomes the first deaf player to play in the Scotties tournament of hearts. Not sure if Nova Scotia is playing in the wild card game Friday (?) but yeah that is happening.

Hockey day in Canada

The 20th edition just wrapped up with Calgary beating Vancouver 6-2. Earlier Montreal beat Toronto in overtime 2-1, Winnipeg beating Ottawa 5-2 and Edmonton beating Nashville 3-2. Yellowknife was host of the day this year. Don't know where it is next year.

Canada bounces to olympics

With a 80-50 win over Sweden, Canada's women's basketball team had punched their ticket to the summer olympics. Woohoo. A great weekend for women's sports. Thanks to Devin Heroux for his updates on this game today.

Canada kicking to an Olympic spot

With a 1-0 win over Costa Rica, our women's soccer team has qualified for the summer games. Excellent. Mexico vs the U.S is the other semi with the winner joining Canada at the olympics. The final for this is Sunday.

Super bowl 54

The Kansas City Chiefs are super bowl champs after beating San Francisco 31-20. First super bowl win since Super Bowl 4. Patrick Mahomes was super bowl mvp. There's another football season until CFL training camps open up in May.
